Raid-De-Himalaya Trivia

Directly or indirectly, approximately 1100 people are involved in the making of a single Raid de Himalaya.

A ‘Raid’ is the technical term for a long distance endurance rally. The Raid de Himalaya is coined from

French meaning a “marathon event OF the Himalaya”….it does not mean we raid the Himalayas!!!!

Only once has a competitive stage been zeroed by a participant in the X-treme category – Sandeep Sharma on the 2005 Raid zeroed the stage from Debring to Rumtse averaging over 65 kmph on this 45 kilometre climb up Tanglang La.

Suresh Rana, from Manali is the only competitor to win the overall 4 wheel title twice.

The fastest ascent took the Raid in 2002 from Manali (5200 ft) to Pang over the Lachulung la (16,600 ft) in just under 9 hours !

320 people were rescued in a blizzard in 2005 from on top of Baralacha la in 2005 without a single injury by Himalayan Motorsport officials and brought down to Patseo to safety.

Niaz Ali on the 2000 Raid drove a distance of 32 kilometres of competitive stage on 3 wheels! His right rear wheel hub sheared along with the wheel but he continued to finish the stage on the handbrake! The last part of this mad but heroic effort was the descent from Jalori Pass!

Raid Gypsies on the descent from Kunzum la towards Kaza have regularly reached speeds of over 110 kmph on a road only slightly better than a riverbed!! Over this stage a regular jeep will take 8 hrs. Raid Gypsies will have to conclude the journey in 2 hours and 30 minutes or be disqualified for being too slow.

65 official vehicles ensure that oncoming traffic is stopped before a Raid stage is flagged off! There are at least 25 officials amongst these that have more than 25 years of motorsporting experience behind each of them!

The raid has its own mobile workshop, generators, camp facilities for over 200 people, 25 mechanics, 6 ambulances and a host of media paraphernalia which do not include the private service for the X-treme vehicles.
