In city, right hand on the wheel in 12 o clock position.. left hand on the gear knob..
On the highway however one is comfortable.. Usually the right is resting on the window pane and left at 10 o clock holding the wheel .. On ghats it 10 and 2 o clock

abdulzunair,
Go with the 10-2 o'clock holding position. The fingers/palm of both hands should be firmly placed on the steering wheel. The thumb fingers of both hands should top align in a straight line, like this ---^--------^---. The holding position should be at the corner where the spoke is joined to the wheel. Get to this arrangement when the steering wheel is perfectly straight, that is wheels are pointing exacting forward. When you come to a halt, ensure you turn to return the steering wheel and tires to straight position before coming to a complete halt The hands should be placed on the outer side of the steering wheel always. Never ever hold on the inside side of the steering wheel by any hand especially while turning. Reason being, when you have to take a deep turn, you cannot rotate your hands freely and the hands will get locked up. During emergency turning, this can be disastrous Find the best sitting position for you by moving the seat forward or backward and adjust seat height and steering wheel position (if your car has that option). Be at a comfortable distance between yourself and steering wheel. Keep this position and never change it anytime, anywhere Turning power required varies depending on power steering or not. Be aware the dymanics very between the two. Be aware of the body dynamics of the car and turning radius. I use the bottom of the palm of one hand to turn as much as I want and in whichever direction I want. It works smoothly as my power steering is effortless and the response is quick and tremendous (but again this is not advisable) Do not drive with one hand on the steering wheel and another on the gear lever - highly unadvisable. Do not eat or drink while driving. Do not use mobile phones while driving - better get hands-free gear The above can become painful when driving long distances. You can relax the rules a bit on long drives and open stretches, that is you can rest your hand on the door handle, keep a hand on the lap to help reduce shoulder pain, etc. Otherwise the above best practices should be always followed. You can also relax a bit from the above if you are an experienced driver, that is you should have clocked mileage of at least 30,000 kms. Experienced drivers intuitively know when to relax and when to buckle up, when to be casual and when to be alert; they make perfect judgements as to the usage of best practices Hope the above information is useful to you |

Some suggest the 9 - 3 position
And when it comes to the distance from the steering wheel ..... adjust your seat to a position where when you extend your arm and rest it on the top of the steering wheel the steering wheel should touch the wrists of your hands. When doing this also make sure that you do not have to extend your leg fully to depress the clutch/brakes fully... if so .. move a bit closer so that there is a bend at your knee joint when the brake is fully depressed.

Yes, eventually people get used to one style. I frequently use 8 - 3 position. In this way, it is easy for me to honk the steering mounted horn by just a small stretch of left thumb finger

Yup when in India most people have to keep in mind that honking is necessary sometimes
The Punto designer had to put bigger horns in the car before launching it in India
