Best option is to hold the steering wheel rim (and not the centre spokes) in a 10 o clock position. Because in a panic situation when you want to steer suddenly and you are holding the centre spokes there is a limited angle to which you can steer beyond that either you lock your hands or the grip goes away which is very dangerous. By holding the rim you are sure that you can turn fast the rim, by pulling by one hand and then again push by the other hand by that time the other hand can prepare for pulling again. I learnt this from my own experience.Although I have a bad habit of holding the central spoke sometimes or keeping one hand on my gear lever knob. But I have had to steer wildly in some panic situations and that when I realised the limitations of holding the steering wheel as per your own wishlist. Best way is to hold the rim in a 10 o clock position. I saw this being taught by experts in a video and when I used the same I felt more confident. I am trying hard to get rid of my previous habits.

In cars of these days this is the correct way. Since many cars are equipped with airbags, this kinda positioning of hands will not hamper the (unfortunate!) deployment of airbags, and, also save forearms from any injuries from airbags.

It's not 'bad habit' for city drives.
On long distance?
