Car producers raise prices
At least three car manufacturers on Friday announced price hikes in the wake of rising input costs.
While Tata Motors raised prices of Safari and Sumo by up to Rs 15,000, Hyundai said it was raising prive of the newly launched Verna by Rs 10,000.

Another auto major Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) on Friday said it has hiked the price of its sedans by up to Rs 12,801 owing to increasing input costs. The company said the price increase on its sedan models 'City' and 'Civic', to be effective from Saturday, would be at a range of 1 to 1.2%.

i read abt it in newspapers.
plus one more surprise for us and some car makers... the small car definition laid down by finance minister is changed now!
from now on, a small car, to avail some benefit from govt end, must be less than 3.8mtrs long! earlier the limit was for upto 4.0 mtrs!!

this one move has delayed the launch of Chevy AVEO U-VA by 6 months!

thats interesting, but I think it would be better for us if Government defined cars based on on their engine capacity and power rather then their size, at least for the small cars.

Yeah they need to be dropping prices not raising them.

Our US car producers have fallen to the bottom of the pile in terms of quality and sales.

Which manufactrurer was it that announced record losses recently?

George most of the Car/Motorcycle manufacturers in India are raising prices at this time because of the rise in cost of raw materials. Add to that there is a strong growth in the automobile sector which makes the these manufacturers confident of growth even after raising the prices.

Car market leaders Maruti Udyog and Hyundai Motor India today increased prices on select models with immediate effect, which would make their products costlier by up to Rs 12,000 and Rs 3,500, respectively.

Post price hike, newly launched Zen Estillo and new WagonR will be costlier by Rs 3,500, a Maruti statement said.

The increase in Maruti 800, Omni, Alto, Swift (Petrol)Vxi and Esteem is Rs 2,000, it said, adding the highest hike was on Baleno and Gypsy King at Rs 12,000.

A major portion of this increase will go toward the dealers' margins to help them provide better services to the customers, Maruti said.

Hyundai, however, restricted the price hike to its flagship model Santro, which will now be dearer by Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,500.

Post price hike, the base model of Santro will cost about Rs 2.7 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), while the top end will be tagged at about Rs 4.18 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
