Post copied from the introduction thread for better response.

Faustus you are right, Maruti has the best service network in India and even has one in Leh. For Bombay - Leh and back, while any car should be able to do it. It would be advisable to go for one that offers decent ground clearance and at the same time enough space for occupants to sit comfortably.

Based on that, my recommendation would for Swift however its price comes quite close to that of Gypsy. Waiting for others to pour in their suggestions.

Re: Cheapest car suitable for trip to Ladakh
Gypsy would be a great option for the Laddakhi terrain, but since you will be driving from Bombay to Leh and back the mojority of kms will be spent in plains where the Gypsy ride is quite bumpy and uncomfortable.

On my first ride to Laddakh I met 4 guys in a Wagon R on their way back from Laddakh... they had no problems with their car they just said its more advisable to exercise caution when crossing water crossings to prevent underbelly scraps. People from Himachal frequently travel to Leh on Alto and 800.

So for Laddakhi terrain specific Gypsy is the best, but overall for the Mumbai-Leh-Mumbai package something like Esteem or Swift will be better.

Cheers
Eric

I agree.
Cheapest: M800. Strangely this is also one of THE most successful for mountain touring!
The Alto is a close second, and less prone to wheel rim damage since it comes with higher profile tyres.

In that case wouldn't it be advisable to fit the same tyres on a M800?

As a general rule: whenever possible, fit tyres of a higher profile for a trip into bad terrain. You need not go oversize by way of rim size, but slightly broader and one size higher profile will always be an advantage.

Re: Cheapest car suitable for trip to Ladakh
Before doing this please check that the higher profile tyres on stock rims will mean bigger tyre diameter, hence chances of fender scraping on turns is increased, also ur power and torque on road will be diminished as tyre size has changed.

One thing more that can be done is adding spaces to the suspension to increase ride hight and hence ground clearance. This will have very little effect on low speeds of mountains, but at high speeds the car will become a little more unstable as its aerodynamic profile would have changed.

On mod i saw long time back in some indian auto magazine was that soem one had routed their exhaust pipe to blow hot exhaust gases on the front wind screen, to defrost it and keep it clear of misting. Modern cars have demisters, so not much use now. But the fringe benefit was that the river crossings were safer with chance of water getting into the exhaust system reduced )

Re: Cheapest car suitable for trip to Ladakh
Its very very easy and cheap to increase GC of the 800 with spacers due to the simple nature of the suspension.
I have seen quite a few "raised" 800s which can then be fitted with bigger tires.

Don't spacers reduce the reliability of the vehicle?
