Professional Camera (full frame): Mark 1 Ds III, the earlier model was Mark 1 Ds II

Full frame DSLR (semi pro): 5D Mark II, earlier model was 5D
Semi Pro (crop sensor): 7D, new model line
Semi Pro (crop sensor): 50D, earlier model was 40D
Entry Level (crop sensor): 500D, earlier model was 450D and the one before it, 400D and so on till 300D
New Entry Level (crop sensor): 1000D

Kuldeep and other owners of 18-55 mm canon lens, question for you guys:

Have you used CPL with this lens. How are you dealing with the movement of Filter Thread during AF. Do you have to adjust CPL, every time AF works.

I see this problem with 18-55 of both Nikon and Canon.

I actually focus, and then adjust CPL. So once you focus, you adjust the CPL, after that refocus, the front element will be at same place

But in 18-55mm for both canon and Nikon says, filter thread rotates with focus, so is'nt that means once you adjust CPL, and refocus, this will rotate the Filter Thread in front element?

Or there are different kind of CPL?

rk, when you prefocus before adjusting CPL, the focus the front thread will come to a certain point. As long as you focus on the same place after ajdusting the CPL, the front thread will remain at same place.
The front element(where filter is screwed) on has a position depending upon where you focus. So if you are focussing near infinity, you will always have the thread at same position.

So do this.
Choose where you want to focus - Focus
Adjust CPL(this may rotate the front element a tiny bit).
Again half click, so it moves back tiny bit.
This tiny bit movement has no effect on the CPL

I used the 18-55mm (non IS). It came as part of the 350D kit which I bought over 3 years ago.
It was used 99% of the time, with only a handful of shots from the 75-300(wild ass ones), and similar number using the 50mm 1.8

So for someone like me on a very very tight budget, will it make more sense to invest in a UV, a CPL, a 16 GB card and a tripod first??

Has anyone been able to evaluate various filters. The price comparison of a local brand like Omax and mid level ones like Hoya and the top end like B+W makes me wonder how diffrent they all could be??

Why do you want to spend money on a UV filter? Its useless. If you want something for "protection", use a lens hood
As for price of local vs good brands, there is a saying "You pay peanuts, you get monkeys!"
Jokes apart, local CPL filters usually cause too much distortion and rob you of sharpness
