Jammu-Srinagar highway closed

Srinagar, September 1
The 300-km Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed due to shooting stones triggered by a heavy rain at Banthal this morning, a traffic police official said.

He said the highway was closed after a heavy rain since early this morning triggered shooting stones at Banthal between Ramban and Banihal.

The official said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) men had been mobilised and they were working to clear the highway for vehicular traffic.

However, he said the BRO men were facing difficulties in getting the highway cleared because of incessant rain.

Here is more information from www.ndtv.com

Saturday, September 2, 2006 (Srinagar):

Authorities have sounded a flood alert in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

The water level of Jhelum, 40 km upstream from Srinagar, at Sangam in Anantnag district was over 7 ft above the danger mark at 28.05 ft, a flood control department spokesman said.

This follows incessant rains in the past three days.

Spokesman said it was one feet beyond the red mark at 19.0 ft in Ram Munshi Bagh in Srinagar while further downstream at Asham in Baramulla district it was flowing at 11.70 ft, short of the 14 ft level.

There were no reports of any breach but the water level of Jhelum and its tributaries was rising alarmingly in the Valley submerging areas like Charsoo in Anantnag.

There is a threat of floods in Akhnoor and areas like Indri, Bakora, Nursinghpura, Hamirpur and Gujral.

People have been advised against going near the rivers.

Highways closed

Srinagar-Jammu and Srinagar-Leh National Highways were closed for a second day due to landslides between Ramban and Ramsu, leaving 2,000 passengers stranded.

The heavy rainfall was, however, hampering road clearance efforts of the Border Roads Organisation.

The government had taken steps to meet any eventuality and had asked the Army, fire and emergency services to supplement flood-control measures, the spokesman said.

Several areas in Anantnag and Pulwama are now flooded. Even low-lying Srinagar hasn't been spared.

The government has requisitioned 50 boats for rescue but going by the Met department's forecast for the next 24 hours the monsoon's fury looks set to continue.

"We are geared up going everywhere taking every possible step to evacuate people in submerged areas and to provide food to the flood-affected people," said Basharat Ahmad Dhar, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir.

Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Mohammed Dilawar Mir convened a review meeting.

He asked officials to gear up to evacuate people from water logged areas and to press mobile dewatering pumps into service in case of a flood emergency.

He visited areas near Charsoo and directed divisional authorities to provide free ration to the flood-hit.

Control rooms have been set up at Srinagar and Ganderbal police headquarters.

This is the first time after 1996 that south Kashmir is witnessing such scenes. (With PTI inputs)
