Dear All ,
Rohtang Pass closed Manali: With the onset of snowfall season, Rohtang Pass located at 13,050 feet above sea level in Lahaul-Spiti district has been closed for traffic, officials said on Friday. The Rohtang Pass, which connects the district to Chamba’s Pangi-Killar and also to Leh-Ladakh, was closed from Thursday, deputy commissioner of Lahaul-Spiti A.S. Rathore said. The highway was scheduled to be closed for winter from November 15 but was closed earlier following snowfall between Sonamarg-Zojila and Gumri. Seeing from the third report and from what was quite evident in Ladakh, this year Ladakh has seen the maximum number of tourists. I guess this would only climb further in the coming years.

So we are looking at unmitigated and rapid destruction of yet another province of the great Himalayas. And wait for the bloody tunnel to come thru! You know, the one being dug below Rohtang!
Though I've not quite understood how that one tunnel will help. It would still not be possible to get to Ladakh, HOPEFULLY! Probably just another one of the half-assed schemes of the GOI! Anyone have more info on this? |

The route once open will ruin some of the most beautiful and least touched parts of Ladakh i.e. Zanskar!
On the other hand the area along Manali - Leh route would become a haven for tourers and those looking for solitude. |

The presumption is that everyone would use the new tunnels beneath rohtang and shingo la, thus traffic would go via zanskar, ruining it, but bringing back the solitude of darcha-leh!

I think that due to opening of the new route, definitely Zanskar and similar might areas may be ruined but then due to availability of much easier approach to Ladakh, maybe BRO would not be interested in maintaining the current route... Hence it would become much more tougher to use this route then... What say ???
