Looks like fun is going to begin early this year:
3rd May 2009: Manali - Leh road status After remaining closed for five months, the Rohtang Pass, the gateway to Lahaul and Spiti district, was reopened last evening. Commander, 38, BRTF (GREF), SK Doon said a snow-clearing team from Manali and the second team from Khoksar reached the Rohtang Pass and connected the Lahaul and Spiti valley after five months. He said due to a heavy snowfall here, widening and curving work was not complete yet and vehicular traffic would be allowed to cross the Rohtang Pass on May 7. Could be, the only problem could be that there is a check post at Marhi and civilians might stop there if the work is on to clear Rohtang, as it is one of last few places on the highway to get cleaned.

As far as I know, Khardung La never closes down for winter. Army and local vehicles do get across, though it is certainly risky and it is only the 4+ wheelers which manage to get across. Have heard similar things about Chang La as well.
Though all that changes if there is any fresh snow fall. |

3rd March 2009: Manali - Leh road status
Erratic snowfall and rising temperatures have enabled the beginning of snow-clearing operations on part of the 475 km-long Manali-Leh National Highway 21 two months before usual, officials in Himachal Pradesh said Tuesday. “Due to the dry spell in the past few weeks, we have decided to start the snow-clearing operation on the crucial Manali-Leh highway,” S.K. Doon, commander of the General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF) 38 Task Force, told IANS. Source: Snow-clearing work begins on Manali-Leh highway |

.......three independent teams were deployed for opening the 222-km long Manali-Sarchu section of the road with help of snow-cutter as well as other modern machines. The team from Manali is just short of Gulaba camp, while the second team is clearing snow between Stingri-Khoksar and the Rohtang pass. The third team is moving from Stingri towards the 4883-m high Baralacha Pass. The Manali-Rohtang road has now been opened to vehicular traffic up to Gulaba...... here is details.
