Dear BCMTeers,
I am planning for a trip to Amarnath along with my parents in the month of August or September as I understood that it will be opened at that time of the year. I need your suggestions in the following aspects: 1) How long it would take for us to reach Amarnath from Delhi? 2) We will be leaving from Kanchipuram (Near Chennai) to Delhi? 3) Is it advisable to reach Jammu directly if we want to save time.? 4) Is there any other place we can include our itenary apart from amarnath.? 5) What are the other factors I need to consider during this trip as my parents are accomapanying me? 6) Can I visit Vaishno Devi as well during this trip? 7) Stay/Food/Travel details are also required We would prefer a pure vegetarian food all the way. I need all our peers' input in this regard. All travel by train only.

3) Yes it would be better to go directly to Jammu.
4) Vaishno Devi, Patnitop and Gulmarg can easily be incorporated if you have time. In any case you will be going to Srinagar and Sonamarg (if you wish to take the smaller route) and would be going to Pahalgam if you want to take the original route. Btw how many days are you planning for it? Topic moved to itinerary section |

Shankar, wait for Dr Rohin to return from Kashmir !! He knows each & every bit about the region & has been to Amarnath many times. He'll be back by this week. I'll ask him to post replies here !!
As Yogesh mentioned, Do inform the number of days so that an itinerary can be drwan & other possibilities can be explored.

Yogesh and Ambuj.. Thanks a lot
I can plan for a maximum of 6 days from Jammu To amarnath and sorroundings.. Is that ok? if not i will restrict ourself only to Amarnath this time.. I cant take anything more than that as of now. That 6 days does not include the travel between Jammu and Chennai as it would take another 6 days. In short a total of 12 days. Will work out for flight one way if possible.. |

Day 1: Early morning from Jammu to Pehalgam enjoy the scenic beauty there
Day 2: Early morning from Pehalgam to Chandanwari by Bus or Taxi.Leave for camp near Sheshnag Lake, halfway distance from Chandanwari to Amarnath cave. Day 3: Leave for Amarnath cave, stay in camp near Amarnath Cave Day 4: Early morning Darshan and then prepare to leave for Baltal (14kms from cave).Try to reach baltal before 4:30pm as last bus leaves baltal to kashmir by this time. You can stay in Sonmarg on your way or you can head straightway to kashmir. Day 5: Enjoy the beauty of the valley. Dal Lake, Shankaracharya Temple ....... Day 6: Leave for delhi from Srinagar airport(Flights from Srinagar to Delhi costs less than flighs from Srinagar to Jammu). In case u want to visit Vaishnoo Devi u will be requiring 2 more days.

Drrohin, thanks for the reply..
How long it would take for me to reach baltal after darshan. The only way to reach baltal is by Trekking? During which part of the year the cave temple will be opened for darshan. If I am right it is during the months of July, August, September.. ?? thank you once again.. |

And yes, walking is the only option from Amarnath to Baltal. Medical emergencies apart! Then, it's a chopper.

I wonder, if Batal-Amarnath route is shorter then why people would still prefer Pehalgam-Chandanwari-Amarnath route.
Is it because of difficulty or is there any sacred beliefs associate with it. Last edited by sandeep9868; 18-03-09 at 11:59 AM. Reason: modify |
