Default Jammu to Darjeeling

I would like some guesstimates on the time requirement to travel between these locals taking into account some moderate play time and a stop in both Pokhara and Kathmandu.

Does 10 days sound doable?

Thanks

I don't want to go back to Delhi unless I have to, I would like to cross the border in the Baitadi region of Nepal, the nearest Indian town would be Pithoragarh, Uttaranchal. I would turn east somwhere south of Jammu on the return of the Leh ride, cut through Shimla and head towards Nepal via Pithoragarth/Baitadi. Once in Nepal I'll make my way to Pokhara, then Kathmandu and eventually back into Indian state of West Bengal riding a path that's as northerly as possible. Once in Darjeeling I'll sell the bike and fly back to Delhi from Bagdogra Airport.

My biggest concern now is locking in my airline tickets and I'll need a return date to fly back to the US. I figure I'll part with ya'll after we leave jammu, which should be around the 24th +/-. What I'm not sure of is whether 10 days is a realistic riding time between Jammu and Darjeeling? I'll add extra days for selling the bike etc., but since I don't know anything about the riding conditions/ speed etc. I have a hard time setting a time.

Thanks

EDIT: I'm not 100% sure there is an entry point at the above mentioned place. The names of the cities are different on different maps and info is sketchy which make things difficult. But all my maps show some sort of road on both the Indian and Nepalese sides of the border, however if there is no entry I'll just ride south until I come to an entry, at the worst it's a beautiful region to ride.

Don’t know about entry into Nepal from Uttaranchal, but from Jammu you can make your way through Jammu - Pathankot - Mandi - Theog - Hatkoti - Chakrata and enter into Uttaranchal (Pithoragarh would be another day or two ride away) but it will consume a lot of time however would be scenic.

Alternatively you can take the plains route from Jammu and cross through Punjab and Haryana and reach Ambala; this route is mostly fast paced and would take you roughly 8-9 hours to complete.

From Ambala, you can take NH-73 to Saharanpur and continue to Roorkee and make your way through NH 58 to reach Haridwar. Don’t know the road condition for this route, but my guess is, it’s not in good condition so at least count another day for this or maybe you can push till Kotdwara and spend the night there.

From Kotdwara it should be another days worth of ride to reach Pithoragarh through Kotdwara - Ramnagar - Haldwani - Ranikhet - Naini Tal - Almora – Pithoragarh.

Can’t confirm if this route is 100% correct since I haven’t yet done it and I was planning this route (Punjab – Uttar Pradesh – Uttaranchal) with the help of Rajasthan map I have

Note to self: buy good maps!

Hmm, it seems like 10 days will not be enough especially if I want to take the best routes. I'll try and steal days off the front end of the trip and add them to the back end since my total time away is limited, perhaps 14 days would be better to make it to West Bengal from Jammu.

Let me see what I can do

theres a road extending from mahendranagar which will lead to pokra..kathmandu aswell as kakrabhita the entry point to west bengal... The mahendranagar entry point is acessed from

There are three main crossing points: Sunauli-Bhairawa, Birganj-Raxaul and Kakarbhitta-Silguri. The Sunauli border crossing is the best one from Varanasi, the Birgunj crossing is the easiest from Calcutta; and Kakarbhitta is the best crossing from/to Darjeeling.

I don't think any thing is required for an India citizen apart from the bikes papers and his license. For a foreigner, no idea.

For a Indian citizen you dont need a passport or visa, but you need a govt approved photo id card like... visa, driving license, pan etc. But need all papers related to bike or car...
For any other foreigner you need to have a valid visa, which can be taken from their respective consulate...
For the cars or bike there has to be taken permits for the days you plan to stay in nepal...on paying a certain fees for the number of days. They will issue you a specila registration plate which you have to fix on your wind screen...and also have to keep the permits with the car all time.
Theres basically no problem in travelling in nepal by car or bike... there are certain check point where you need to show the permits... thats all. I have entered from raxaul and exited from kakarbhita in last october only.. I have travelled in my esteem... and the journey is too scenic and the roads are also really good. We have even gone to the China border town known as Khasa from Dhulikhel...crossing a place of hotstreams called Tatopani.
