If you have 18 days starting Kargil, you can do some thing like this:
Day 1 Kargil - Padum Day 2 Padum visit nearby monasteries Day 3 Padum - Sankoo You will get diesel in Kargil and you will need to carry enough for at least 550kms, if possible 600kms. Day 1 and Day 3 are high mileage day, so you need to leave early in the day (by 5-6am), it would be best if you can stop in Sankoo rather than Kargil for the start of the journey, since this should cut down at least an hour or more from the journey. Day 4 Sankoo – Lamayoru Day 5 Lamayoru - Leh Day 6 Leh (apply for permits, local sightseeing) Day 7 Leh - Thiksey - Shey - Leh You can skip Shey and visit Thiksey on Day 6 itself, there by saving 1 day. Day 8 Leh - Khardung La - Diskit - Hunder Day 9 Hunder - Diskit - Panamik - Khardung La – Leh You will need to have diesel for roughly 300 – 350kms, though you should get diesel at the IOC petrol pump at Diskit Day 10 Leh - Chang La - Tangste - Lukung/Spangmik (Pangong Tso) Day 11 Lukung/Spangmik - Chang La - Leh Again you will need enough diesel for roughly 350kms. Day 12 Leh - Upshi - Korzok (Tso Moriri) Day 13 Korzok - Tso Kar - Sarchu Day 14 Sarchu - Kokhsar You will need enough diesel for 550 - 600kms to do this route, though you should get diesel at Pang, Sarchu, Darcha, Keylong in black. But I wouldn’t count on it especially since it will cost almost double the normal rate and might have kerosene mixed in it. If memory serves me right there are only a couple of guest houses at Kokhsar so it might be a good idea to stay at Keylong or Tandi, also you need to tank up at Tandi for the journey ahead. 10 kms after Kokhsar is the bifurcation for Kunzum La and onward to Kaza, haven’t done this route but I am sure Salil and others who have done this route will help you plan this route. |

Subroto Khardung La and Zoji La have time controlled traffic, i.e. traffic is let go from each side for couple of hours and then its the turn for the other side.
Now that I have covered Spiti, I will list out few more details about it. |

Is it possible to find out the timeings before we reach the points to avoid waiting?
Khardungla is at the entrance of Nubira Valley & Zojila b2n Sonmarg & Drass am I right? What is the most interesting point in Spiti in your view? Because of time constraints may not be able to do the whole of Spiti. Is Kaza enough? Subroto

For both the points the best source of information would be the local taxi/bus/truck drivers. Yes Khardung La is at the entrance of Nubra Valley and Zoji La comes after Sonamarg.
In Spiti the Pin Valley is the most scenic place, I managed to cover almost every thing in Spiti in 6 days with ease, which includes one day for coming back to Delhi from Manali. With a little push you can cover Spiti in 3-4 days starting from Keylong or Kokhsar. |
