I found some blogs which archive the Manali Leh highway opening dates.
But I was trying to track the dates on which the highway closes.
Most sites say a vague timeframe of oct end.
while on this site http://www.bikemap.net/route/7383/ its easy to figure out that Rohtang La is not the only high mountain pass on the way.
So if any of the passes close due to snowfall, the highway closes.
So the question is.
Is there any website/document etc., which documents the closing dates of Manali Leh highway?
If a travel plan is made such that the going is around 2nd oct and coming back (crossing Rohtang on way back is 11th Oct), is there a risk that while coming back there is no way?

Similarly any site documenting the close of Srinagar leh highway?

Tanveer, no one can give you exact dates in advance. You'll just have to play it by ear. Generally Srinagar route opens first and closes last.

One issue to bear in mind is that 'technically' the highway is declared CLOSED around mid-Sept; which means that if you go, you go at your own risk and the army is not going to lauch search expeditions if you go missing!

The routes are usually open till past mid October, but you can never be sure.
Go on the dates you are planning and IF both routes close, FLY back. Leave your car there. Go again next year, FLY in and drive back!!
I feel no one can suggest a better plan!

But Raid-De-Himalaya starts on 2nd october, those guys must have a way to come back?
What about Keylong-Kaza-Narkanda route. When does that thing close?

Kunzum La and Rohtang generally close about the same time, though not necessarily together. Yes that could be a 3rd way out (apart from Rohtang or ZojiLa).

But don't you like my idea of leaving the car behind?
You'd then have valid reasons for: 1) buying another car
& 2) going to Leh again next year.

Some information about on ROHTANG TUNNEL from Lok Sabha Channel

Construction of Rohtang Tunnel on Manali-Keylong-Sarchu road was approved by the Government on 6th September 2005.

The project is approved at a cost of Rs.1410.37 crore which includes construction of Rohtang Tunnel proper (Rs.943.32 crore), approach roads to the tunnel (Rs.180.20 crore) and alternate road alignment Darcha –Padam-Nimmu (Rs.286.85 crore).

Progress on construction of Rohtang tunnel is as follows:

M/s. SMEC International Pvt. Ltd. from Australia was awarded consultancy contract for Rs.62.96 crore for detailed design and advisory services during construction. Design of tunnel is already completed by the consultant.
· Pre-qualification of contractors for construction of civil works of Rohtang Tunnel has already been completed.

· Tenders have been issued to 8 pre-qualified contractors. Five tenders have been received back on 25th February 2008.

· Technical evaluation of tenders is in progress.

· Contract is likely to be awarded by 30th July 2008.

The project is scheduled for completion by 2014.

I personally find Tribune to be a good source for Himachal and Ladakh routes, though it would be a little tough to sort through all these listings, but it can be done. http://www.google.com/custom?q=manal...ibuneindia.com

In fact after going through the listings, you will find that in past few years, the Manali - Leh closes in November.
