Hi all
I am a new member @ BCMTouring . I really appreciate yogesh / salil and others @ BCM touring for such a great forum.. no other forum has such a depth and turnaround time for the replies. We (group of 6 people) are planning for motorcycle trip from Manali to Leh and see near by places. We have about 9 days in hand , starting from June 3oth Saturday in MANALI to July 8th Sunday (preferrably in LEH). July 8th our last day we are planning to fly from leh-delhi-bangalore. After seeing numerous posts in this forum and referrences from other sites, we are totally CONFUSED about the itinerary so to say ![]() I saw that it is possible to ride from manali-sarchu-sumdo-pang-Tso morriri. Is there any road from Tso Morriri to Pangong Tso via Puga ?! Is it possible to hire a bike only for a one-way trip ?! From Manali-leh ?! I spoke to Naushad, he said whether it is one-way or roundtrip , we need to pay him 25k per person !! which includes bfast, dinner and acco !! Do any of you have contact numbers of bike rentals in manali ?! Can we hire the bike in manali and send it back by trucks ? yeah i am confused datz y so many so questions BCM touring veterans can you suggest some feasible itinerary for 9 days to see tso morriri, pangong tso and hunder ?! am asking really for more !! |

Kshathriya first of all thanks for the kind words.
With regards to your plan, well you can certainly hire bikes from Manali (bullets) and drop them in Leh. The problem you are likely to face is the number of days you guys have in hand. In Manali you will probably need a day to hire motorcycles, which means unless you arrive in Manali on 29th June morning/afternoon and can get the bikes that day itself, you would end up spending another day in Manali and would only be able to leave by the 1st of July. In such a scenario you can probably try out this itinerary: 30th June = Manali 1st July = Manali Sarchu 2nd July = Sarchu Leh 3rd July = Leh (get the permits and local sightseeing) 4th July = Leh Khardung La Diskit Hunder 5th July = Hunder Diskit Sumur Panamik Sumur Khardung La Leh 6th July = Leh Pangong Tso (night stop at either Tanksey, Lukung or Spangmik) 7th July = Pangong Tso Leh 8th July = In case you get the bikes on the 29th, you will have a spare day. Which means you can either spend it in Leh or en route to Leh on the Manali Leh highway. Another possibility in such a scenario is to get the permits through a travel agent in advance; if you manage to do that, then you can do this: 30th June = Manali Sarchu 1st July = Sarchu Korzok (Tso Moriri) 2nd July = Korzok (Tso Moriri) Leh 3rd July = Leh (local sightseeing) 4th July = Leh Khardung La Diskit Hunder 5th July = Hunder Diskit Sumur Panamik Sumur Khardung La Leh 6th July = Leh Pangong Tso (night stop at either Tanksey, Lukung or Spangmik) 7th July = Pangong Tso Leh 8th July = At this moment I dont have the contact details of a bike renter in Manali, but you might want to check this post on *********, which so far is the only contact detail have found about a rental service in Manali. But I will try to find out more regarding this if I am able to spend a day in Manali while returning from my Spiti trip. |

i have 2 more questions !! can i get permit by applying from bangalore here ? what all the docs/details required to get permit ?! pointers on these will save us a day !! also one lingering query !! IS IT POSSIBLE TO SCALE PANGONG TSO FROM TSO MORRIRI directly ?! in one of the posts by HITANSHU i saw Pangong-Chushul-Nyoma-Hanle- Day 1 Hanle-Nyoma-Tso Morriri - Day 2 |

Regarding getting the permits from Bangalore, I dont think its possible unless you get some one to do it on your behalf at Leh and even then you need to fax over your identity proof along with the vehicle number you will be traveling in. There are few travel agents in Manali who do this, but vehicle number is a tricky issue and some thing only they can answer.
Chushul Nyoma is even tougher to get permits for, add to that its sandy/slushy terrain and for this you need two extra days apart from one day to reach Leh from Korzok. |

Yogesh ..
now i get a really fair idea on the itinerary !! How about round trip back to manali ?! That is the worst case if one way trip leh and dropping off bikes is tooooooo expensive . With your suggestions for other posts i came up with this . 29th June = Reach Delhi by 8. Start to Manali by Jeep 30th June = Reach Manali afnoon. Bike Rentals and rest. 1st July = Manali Sarchu 2nd July = Sarchu Leh 3rd July = Leh Khardung La Diskit Hunder 4th July = Hunder Diskit Sumur Panamik-Khardung La Leh 5th July = Leh Tso morriri 6th July = Tso Morriri - Sarchu 7th July = Sarchu-Manali. Start to Delhi by Jeep 8th July = Reach delhi Afnoon. Take off to bangalore. We are planning to hire a jeep for delhi -manali-leh-manali-delhi as a back up vehicle with a mechanic and spares and fuel. Is this feasible ?! Also i have one more query ![]() Given a Choice ...what will you prefer to see ? Tso Morriri or Pangong Tso ?! Criteria : Scenic travel . simple

Kshathriya there few issues with this itinerary, first of all, taxis from outside J&K are not allowed into the restricted areas i.e. Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri. So unless its a private number vehicle and the occupants of it are able to prove it, you could get in trouble.
Secondly even a private number vehicle would end up costing you at least 30k for this journey and the payment for the mechanic would be extra as well. Thirdly it looks quite hectic, since after leaving Manali you will not have any rest days. Fourthly you would have to arrange for permits in advance. As for Pangong Tso vs Tso Moriri, well as long as you see one you wont miss the other one. |

Kshathriya in that case you shouldnt face any problems; you can do Leh Pangong Tso Leh in one day. However since you have a backup vehicle, you can carry spare petrol in it and instead of going back to Leh from Karu; you can go to Upshi and spend the night there.
This way you will save roughly hour and a half and 100 kms worth of journey. Ps. is the 22.5k for the entire group or per person? |
