Planning Leh from 10th Aug: Itinerary review.

Folks,

we are planning to start for LEH from delhi on 10th of Aug. Following is the itinerary that we have prepared:

Day 1: delhi - Manali (530 Km)
Day 2: Manali - Sarchu (230Km)
Day 3: Sarchu – Leh (260)
Day 4: Get the permits, and rest.
Day 5: Leh - Khardung La – Leh (80Km round trip)
Day 6: Leh - Pangong Tso (170Km)
Day 7: Stay at pangong/ buffer if we do not reach pangong on Day6.
Day 8: Pangong Tso - Leh
Day 9: Leh - Sarchu
Day 10: Sarchu - Manali
Day 11: Manali – delhi

I need advice on following points:

1. Can leh-pangong-leh be done in 2 days (including time for clicking some good pics).

2. We have 12 days of leave, so can we include Nubra also in 12 days by modifying this itinerary, if yes then please suggest the modification

3. For day 9, 10, and 11 basically the return journey, Is there any other route possible which also gets us back to delhi in 3 days but give us some more photography oppurtunities?

Currently we are 3 in the group (1 from Noida, 1 from Pune, and 1 from blore), if anyone else is intersted and comfortable with these dates then you are most welcome

Whats the mode of your travel ?

In any case I would suggest :
Day 1: delhi - Manali
Day 2: Manali - Sarchu
Day 3: Sarchu – Leh
Day 4: Get the permits, visit local monastries.
Day 5: Leh - Diskit/Hunder
Day 6: Diskit/Hunder - Sumur/Panamik - Leh
Day 7: Leh - Pangong Tso
Day 8: Pangong Tso - Leh
Day 9: Leh - Sarchu
Day 10: Sarchu - Manali
Day 11: Manali – delhi

OR For more photo opprtunities (though shud be avoided around 15th August for security reasons):
Day 1: delhi - Manali
Day 2: Manali - Sarchu
Day 3: Sarchu – Leh
Day 4: Get the permits, visit local monastries.
Day 5: Leh - Diskit/Hunder
Day 6: Diskit/Hunder - Sumur/Panamik - Leh
Day 7: Leh - Pangong Tso - Leh
Day 8: Leh - Kargil
Day 9: Kargil - Srinagar
Day 10: Srinagar - Pathankot
Day 11: Pathankot - Delhi

I would prefer
Day 1: delhi - pathankot
Day 2: pathankot - Srinagar
Day 3: Srinagar - Kargil
Day 4: Kargil - Leh must visit Lamayuru and if u are interested in monasteries Alchi it has very old paintings which i missed
Day 5: Get the permits, visit local monastries.
Day 6: Leh - Diskit/Hunder
Day 7: Diskit/Hunder - Sumur/Panamik - Leh
Day 8: Leh - Pangong Tso
Day 9: Pangong Tso - Leh
Day 10: Leh - Sarchu
Day 11: Sarchu - Manali
Day 12: Manali - Delhi

Please read the himalayan loop in the north india travelogue section for more info if u are driving yourself
also this is a very action packed itinerarary so please ensure that there are 2 drivers per car if u are driving yourself

i have suggested u go the srinagar way (terrorists willing) so that acclimatization is gradual and u will have a smaller chance of getting hit by ams.
please note that if you visit the local monasteries on day 5 u will feel very breathless while moving up and down so please take it easy.
the following are a must see from within
hemis gompa,
shey palace,
ticksey gompa.

We are going by bikes ( 1 p180 - dtsi, 1 p150 classic, and a cbz-xtreme) without pillions, sorry for not mentioning that in previous post

do we need any permits for leh-srinagar highway?

No permits are required to Leh Srinagar.. But as 15th August is falling during your trip, please totally avoid Srinagar & stick to this itinerary :
Day 1: delhi - Manali
Day 2: Manali - Sarchu
Day 3: Sarchu – Leh
Day 4: Get the permits, visit local monastries.
Day 5: Leh - Diskit/Hunder
Day 6: Diskit/Hunder - Sumur/Panamik - Leh
Day 7: Leh - Pangong Tso
Day 8: Pangong Tso - Leh
Day 9: Leh - Sarchu
Day 10: Sarchu - Manali
Day 11: Manali – delhi

In case you want to acclaimatize more you can take one more day on Manali - Leh & do Pangong Tso in Single day...

Follow the itinerary posted by himabuj and it would be possible.

Unfortunately no, other options required at least a day or more.

I am starting for Leh on 1st of Aug... and I have one really bad Itiannary for 10 days trip which is covering Nubra Valley , Pangong Tso and Marsimek La... have a look on it if it helps.....

0 Delhi - Chandigarh 240 km ( starting after office on friday )
1 Chandigarh - Manali/ 320 km
2 Manali - Sarchu 230 km
3 Sarchu - Leh 260 km
4 Leh-Khardung la-Khalsar-Diskit-hunder-Khalsar 154 km
5 Khalsar - Sumur - Panamik - Leh 180 Km
6 Leh-Karu-Chang la-Pangong Tso-Spangmik 170 km

9 Keylong - somewhere inbetween Manali/Chd 340 Km

Was planning to come back via Srinagar but dropped the plan bcoz of Polictical issues thr......

PS: This is just a rough itinerary which will be executed only if everything goes well.......

p and will keep changing it at run time depending on My and my bike's status.... and Food supply for both of us...

12th : Sarchu – Leh (213KM)
13th : Get the permits and do some local sightseeing.
14th : Leh - Khardung La - Diskit (Nubra Valley)
15th : Diskit - Hunder - Diskit - Sumur - Panamik - Khardung La - Leh
16th : Leh - Pangong Tso
17th : Pangong Tso - Leh
18th : Leh - Tso Moriri
19th : Tso Moriri - Leh
20th : Leh - Sarchu
21st : Sarchu - Manali
22nd : Manali – Kullu – Jalori Pass – Rampur – Hatu – Shimla – CHD -- Delhi

Adding Marsimikla with the Pangong Tso is doable or not in a day??

It is suggested to climb MarsimikLa in morning arnd 8-9 AM ...so make sure of that.....
