Hi guys


This is my first post here but am a regular reader. Over the last few days I have been reading a lot on the Ladakh forum and have found tons and tons of information for planning my trip. My sincere thanks to all those who have posted so much information here.

Now I'm myslef planning for a trip to Leh in first week of october likely 2nd oct...But I'm all alone as of now and need some people who can chip in and Njoy the ride with me. I know its too short a notice as its already 26th Sept, but I like trip to be offhand as they are more fun.
Here is my itinerary which can be felxible as per the guys who are intrested.

1 2nd Oct Delhi to Manali (prolly by Bus Volvo)
2 3rd Oct Manali to Keylong/Sarchu (By Taxi )
3 4th Oct Keylong/Sarchu to Leh (By Taxi)
4 5th Oct Leh (Heaven)
6 Now from 5th to 11th Explore Leh and nearby lakes, Trekking, Monestries

7 12th early morning fly back to delhi

Now we can also leave on 9th Oct also in a cab back to delhi...
This option is open.


so above is my itinerary which is flexible, but I prefer the trip shud be between 2nd Oct to 12th Oct,

I'm a Software Engg.... working in gurgaon, but i'm not at all a workholic believe me I'm better off on roads then sitting in my cubicle working. Need some time off and cannot afford to miss leh this time out or it will be a whole another year of wait.

This year, winter seems to be setting in much earlier than usual.
Perhaps best to avoid doing it this year, unless you don't mind being stuck for days and perhaps having to fly back!

well I think weather is pretty Ok till 15th .. and anyways i'm planning to come back by plane to delhi.....

Boy, if that encourages you then I would like to discourage by telling you the following fact :
1. Its not Leh which is troublesome, it's the road to Leh.
2. Leh is below 3600 mtrs of height & you are going to cross 5 passes before reaching Leh via Manali which are above that height. These are the trouble points mainly, the heighest being TanglanLa close to 5400 mtrs...
3. If you are in Leh, good... you wont get stranded there.. but the chances of getting the beating is on the way to Leh & getting stranded for even 2 days here can take toll out of you
4. Not sure whether buses would be plying to Leh, not sure whether in how many days passes on the way will open if get closed, not sure whether there'll be accomodations available on the way during that period.
5. reaching Leh or returning from Leh by flight is ok, but if the passes (read K LA & Changa LA) are closed, you wont see anything but the monastries & may be Magnetic Hill..

One suggestion, don’t spend the night at Sarchu, instead do Manali - Keylong/Jispa - Leh, because:

A. It would be terribly cold at Sarchu at night
B. You will be between two major passes which can get closed (Baralacha La and Tanglang La) and apart from tents and army base, there is nothing in between.

Apart from that, go for it but be prepared for any delays as weather has been bad this year.

Thanks for that insight ....though it makes me ache.... I'm not sure if i'll be in india to do the same next year .. as I have some other plans... and I am really looking fwd to do this trip...may be I'm a lil late this time... let see..... though I think I'm ready to take a chance ....

If u ve really made up ur mind, why not go for a less adopted option here at BCMT, Fly both ways!!

By road, make sure u have enuf days in hand in case of an inevitable delay...

Kurt, i would not advice to fly both ways for :
1. He would not have much to do in Leh except for monastries & local sight seeing. (I am considering that he's flying because passes are closed & he wont be able to cross K La & Chang La).
2. He has many days at hand. if he's ready for delays, he shud go by road. atleast he'll do justice to the days spent in that area..

Friend I didnt advice to drop, just said re-think which meant, consider these factor & be prepared accordingly... go ahead..

Thats true Amit, but then even if he does eventually reach Leh, he wud stil have monastries and only monastries to deal with .... Plus the ordeal he wud hav to go thru if (and only if) he gets delayed. ....

M only saying this coz of the past recent developments at rohtang....

Guys he is also into trekking, so there should be enough options to keep him busy once he reaches there. In any case, it might just be too late for him to book a ticket to Leh at this moment.
