Srinagar - Leh
Plan to undertake journey to Leh via Srinagar in own car running on premium diesel only. Any problems with the diesel fuel? Will it freeze if we stop for an overnight stop?

Re: Srinagar - Leh
Prasham is right, there shouldn't be a problem especially on the Srinagar - Leh route. Though cold starting very early in the morning could a bit tough, especially on the Manali - Leh route.
Topic moved to Ladakh and Zanskar section.

Re: Srinagar - Leh
As long as you want , but a minimum of 10-12 days. How much time can you spare and what all places do you want to visit?

Re: Srinagar - Leh
Thx - Just about 10-12 days; Now the biq Q - Do you think a Skoda can go all the way?
Incidently, last year/or (2006?), we planned a Manali-Leh trip in our Skoda; Without much difficulty & in comfort (driving carefuly) reached Kellong; This was just a day after Rohtang opened; The stretch beyond Rohtang, almost for 70-80 km was bad with not a soul; on the way back just short of Rohtang the car got stuck in what is known as 'Pagal Nalla' - Fortunately by this time the traffic had started & we were able to get help
From Kellong we hired a Sumo, and went all the way to J&K border; in hindsight our Skoda could have easily gone over Baralucha
I am given to understand that Sirinagar-Leh is much better than Manali-Leh (latter being more scenic)
I my guess it that it will take 4-5 days of driving @ 10hrs/day & about 5-6 days of travelling around where ever a Skoda can go!
Look fwd to hearing from you all

Re: Srinagar - Leh
Ground clearance of Skoda is around 135 mm only... might have few problems if you try Manali-Leh route... If you wanna go to leh anyway... try out Srinagar-Leh route...
Best thing according to me is drive till manali and hire a good taxi from there on... do Manali-Leh in 3 days and enjoy the route ...

Re: Srinagar - Leh
You are right, Srinagar - Leh is much-much better and the main problem usually is Zoji La. However these days there is road construction work going on between Namik La and Lamayuru, so you might face a bit of problem at those places, apart from that it would be an easy drive, especially if you made it Keylong without much problem.
The only major issue I can foresee is, if it starts to rain while you are climbing Zoji La, in which case the slush would cause a bit of problem.
