Are tour packages a good option
hi,
I am a solo female from mumbai who wants to visit ladakh in june or july. I checked out few tour packages of 12-15 days which costs around 25k-30k.
So is going in a tour package a better option or should I look out for a travel buddy?

Well, planning a tour yourself could make it more cheaper, but more than that, you have flexibility, and can change your trip in between to accomodate a place or two or delete some depending on the situation as you find it reaching there,so as to make the best out of your stay in the Ladakh or any place you visit.Remember, you may not go back there too often.
So,travelling with buddies, planning your own trip always enjoys an edge over package trips.
But,in your case, maybe finding a package would be more suitable considering you are alone. Best would be if you could find a reliable group to travel !
Wish you all the best

Try to plan the tour by your self and you will really enjoy the effort, even the slips that may happen in the proccess....!!!!
Getting travel buddies to Ladakh is not very difficult as it is a very popular destination and many people go there regularly. In case you are not comfortable biking you can try and get buddies who drive. Be careful in choosing friends and go for short drives before going on a long one.

Re: Are tour packages a good option
Package tours are useless.. untill & unless you are going for a trek where guides, porters, cooks are mandatory.. in that case also you can directly hire them instead of going for PACKAGE.. But for Ladakh its of no use... Our total expenses of this trip are coming to 10,000K per head +/- 10% .... we are going by Scorpios with seating of six in each vehicle... so you'll notice there is no comparison of of costs....

Re: Are tour packages a good option
@Poonam: Tour packages are excellent for families who have fixed their travel plans and dont intend to deviate from it. For single travellers like you, backpacking is the best option, you will have more fun as it would provide you flexibility, freedom and a greater chance to interact with others and locals. And if you can find a travel companion, that should be great...but do try and interact with him/her/them before commencement of the trip. An excellent vacation can be spoiled due to wrong company and an excellent company can turn a mindane trip to be life changing experience.
Take the plunge with your safety in mind and enjoy the trip!
Cheers,
Shamik

Re: Are tour packages a good option
Words of wisdom from Shamik da, Poonam if this is the first time you are going to be traveling alone, then it might be a good idea to go with a packaged tour if you are unable to find the right company.
Like Shamik said, packaged tours are best for people who don’t want to deviate from their travel plans, while backpacking/traveling on your own is best for those who like to go with the flow.

Planning yourself is easy...
1) Book yourself tickets on delhi-leh / delhi-srinagar flight and return by the delhi-leh / delhi-srinagar.
2) There are lots of hotels in Ladakh to suit each an every kind of budget, moreover you can always get one when you arrive in Leh. So don't worry about accomodation or else if you are willing to book it in advance search for a list of hotels and GH's ou our website.
3) There are numerous travel agents in Leh who conduct trips all round ladakh on shared basis. So you just need to visit leh and contact any of the popular travel agents in Leh bazaar.
So its simple its like 1, 2, 3

Word of caution... Don't try to find travel buddy... Do it on your own...

Very nicely said,Prasham! Seems quite simple
But in this case what it stands for Poonam, when someone is completely alone,it may not be that easy to find oneself a good hotel or a travel agent to suit ones need after landing in a completely new city for the first time in her life, and more so if the person is female, and is not so acquainted with travelling alone. Well, surely finding travel buddy for her may not be the best proposition around, but going for package tours could be the key for her,as it would be the safest and also quiet fullfilling for her,if she doesn't mind spending a little extra. What do you think?
