Since some days (after price hike in petrol) I was doing some experiment.

I have noted that if you turn petrol cock to off while nearing your destination, my bike runs for atleast another 0.9 to 1.3 kms beforing I have to turn it to on.

I hope you guys shall understand the above. If mods think they might re-phrase the sentence to help other members understand the matter in better manner.

Does it help to "improve mileage"? If it improves mileage, one will automatically emit lesser Green House Gas (CO2 and others) as one shall be able to run his bike more for the same amount of petrol used.

No way any petrol bike can run without a fuel -- right.
So turning off the petrol cock does not mean turning off the fuel supply to the engine.
Actually the bike is running as there is some fuel in the carburettor which is still getting fed into the engine. (Float valve inside the carb floats in this fuel) once this also get burned out then the bike dies out thirsty.
