Is Helmet A Real Life Saver?
hi pals...
i was thinking about this issue for the past couple of days... it is really grinding me... so i put this in front of u....
incident one : 2 days back i had an accident... i just lost my front in the sandy road and fell down face burst. nothing serious other than that. but i got slight injury in my throat. the reason is, the chin strap in the helmet tightened around my throat during the impact and suffocated me briefly. later i got swelling and tissue fracture in the throat area. it still hurting me.
incident two : last December, i had gone through a major accident. i fell down with face burst. my chin strap again tightened my throat and i got my collar bone fractured.
now my thoughts are, almost all the helmet variants are coming up with the same chin strap technique, which is, the chin strap is wrapping around our throat. thus during a face burst impact the chin strap tend to tighten our throat and making us suffocating and other injuries around the neck and throat area.
in my view there are two solutions for this, one is very simple. that is the chin strap should wrap our jaws instead of the neck. our jaws are more stronger than throat thus we can avoid maximum damage to the throat. but no helmets have such arrangement. almost all helmet straps are wrapping up our throat.
the second solution is, to equip the chin strap with Pretensioners, the technique that is used in car seat belts. but the prob in this is, during the impact the strap will be unplugged and the helmet would come off from the head. this is much more disastrous.
i have no regrets in saying that the helmet is a real life saver... it really saved my life three times. but in in couple of occasions it made me to pay with this chin strap issue...this issue is drilling me quite a lot and i expect our pals to share their views regarding this.
thanks...

Exactly! The chin strap should be tight under your jaw and not hanging there.

i adjusted and shortened my chin strap's length... but still i couldn't find any way to keep it under my jaw instead of under the throat....

Do you still have the same helmet that withstood those crash? I yes then change it ASAP as the shell would have weakened.

Make sure the strap is tight enough to not let the helmet become loose in case of slide.

If you are not in a mood to change the helmet that has i guess taken 2 impacts, you should at least take it to a good helmet showroom, and pack more foam into it so that it fits tightly and doesn't move when you shake your head, as seems to be the case now.

hmmm.. i should change my helmet it seems... it almost completed 2 years now... it didn't had any visible structural damages... the wiser was shattered... and when i changed the wiser, it didn't seat properly in its holes and the plastic screws got loosened... i cant fix 'em... better to buy a new one i guess... but it saved my life twice thus 'm quite hesitant to change it....

i would certainly wish to change the foam... but i fear the shell could be weak... well i think i could take chance by replacing the foam and continue with it. i didn't see any room in the helmet that one can replace the foams. the foams are glued inside i think. is it still possible to change the foams? well mine is the vega corah model. a black version of the following model.

Change the helmet, don't continue with it if you value your life! Even if there is no visiual structural damage, with impacts like those, it would have made the helmet weak. You will be better off getting the cheapest ISI mark helmet then to continue with this one.
