Ladakh - preservation?
Hi,

Just wanted to ask all of you...

With so many plans/trips/travels being made for Ladakh by one and all (Ladakh has become the new flavour for travellers both national (more so) and international), how can one ensure that the place does not lose its lustre over years...

Just to avoid what is gradually happening to the destinations of Goa or Kerala...

Is there any forum or group in the country looking into this?

Interested to know.

Wanderlust

Did the Heisenberg's uncertainty principle prevent scientists from studying the tiny particles?

Probably there isn't a similar topic here. BTW according to me ladakh can never become goa or kerala owing to its remoteness, AMS and other things.

Hey Prasham,

I hope so too... only the determined can travel there.

But still inclined to know if there is anyone with foresight of what may happen to this destination in a decade - and what is being done to take care of its natural beauty...

Re: Ladakh - preservation?
Simplest way would be to not go there and discourage others to go there as well, but I don’t see that happening.

The biggest thing we can do as tourists is to ensure that we don’t throw plastic and other trash in the open, which is a practice which should be followed at every place.

Another thing I would like to mention is that Ladakh, Leh in particular, is already quite a touristy place and in season, there are more tourists and migrants there than the local population and it has been that way for years. Though till now majority of the tourists were foreigners, which I guess will change soon.

With regards to Leh and few other places becoming too touristy, well I recently wrote “Taking those extra steps…” in my blog, while it was written with Manali and Goa in mind, it holds true for almost all touristy places and more so for place like Ladakh, where majority of the tourists stick to four sectors, leaving rest of the area almost tourist free.

Agree - that it is the hands of the travellers to respect the place... also each 'touristy' destination will always have some unventured territory waiting to be found by someone and then put up on a blog - for the true 'researchers' to learn more about that place and make the discovery a part of their journey.

Re: Ladakh - preservation?
My personal observation :

People travelling to interiors/tough of Himalayas (not the more touristy destinations like Shimla/Manali) have a love & respect for the place/Himalayas, as compared to tourists travelling to places like Goa/Kerala... they are sort of dedicated towards Himalayas & have the senses of keeping them clean.. I have personally seen many people carrying plastic bags with them to be used as dustbins during their travel/trek & they thrown it at right place when they touch habitation... Moreover, I have witnessed many who preach to follow this at various forums on Himalaya travels, which they do not do for other touristy places... Therefore, even if the number of tourists get doubled to such "difficult to reach places" of Himalayas, I believe they'll remain cleaner than other touristy destinations... & HOPE SO .

Re: Ladakh - preservation?
See not only tourists even the localities spread the trash.

Did you check the back side of tents at sarchu and similar enroute tents? They just dump it there. But then can we really blame them? They don't have any option to dispose the waste in proper manner.

In Leh too there's a huge dumping ground on the backside of the football/polo ground.

I think that they just lack the infrastructure needed to dispose off the waste.
