Hi
I have a 5 yr old Canon Digital Rebel d-SLR whose original battery BP-511 is now starting to run out on me.. It looses charge but then after 1-1.5 hr again starts showing the charge.. I guess it has gone bad.. anyone having any idea on other substitute batteries for this cam ? Can we use BP-511A or BP-512 in place of the original BP-511 battery ? BP-511A has a higher amperage so it should last me longer i.e. if it can be used ? I intend to use original battery only because you never know how the cheap chinese knock-offs would behave.. better not be penny wise pound foolish with such a costly cam |

If the voltage rating is the same, go right ahead. There will be no damage to the camera.
The mAh rating can be different; even the type can be different, eg Lithium or Lithium-Ion or Nickel-Metal-Hydride etc... |

anup sir the voltage rating is same . But wont the different mAmp affect the camera adversly ? I hope a higher amperage wont cause any harm to the cam ?? On the positive side , I guess BP 512 will give a higher backup time..

Guaranteed, no harm can result from this! If a BP512 battery can physically fit into your camera, go right ahead, provided the voltage rating is the same! |

the canon customer care is so pathetic.. they have absolutely no idea of their products
plus in India they hand out the made in China brand . I had purchased the camera from US where the made in Japan batteries were given and they worked like a charm. |

Buy a third party battery. I got one from sterlingtek, and it works better than the original! and the cost was 9$
At photo fair, expect quite a few third party battery vendors to come, try and buy |

I agree with Tanveer, just go to Photofair and check out third party battery options there. Even if you don’t want to buy one, you can try out BP-511A or BP-512 and see if they fit and work in your camera, because the connectors could be different. Using batteries with higher mah rating should not cause any problem, as long as the volt rating is the same.
