Canon S5-IS lens & accessories
Hi,

As you all know I bought Canon S5-IS and I enjoy taking pics. Now I would like to get involved in depth and trying to get some good lens. But I am an amatuer, I have little idea on those lines.

Going through the book provided by Canon I found the below listed accessories. I would like to know a bit more details about the same and if anyone could explain that would be great.

Wide Converter - WC-DC58A (Guess it is used to take landscapes)
Tele-Converter - TC-DC58B (Guess it is used to take long shots)
Closeup lens - 500D (Guess it is for macro photography)

I don't know about the role played by these lens hood and how they are used.

Conv Lens Adapter(WC) - LA-DC58E
Lens Hood - LH-DC40

Also, let me know if this accessories are ok or any thing better is available out there.

You can visit my blog to see few pics taken using S5IS and leave comments if you like it.

Thanks,
Mohan

Re: Canon S5-IS lens & accessories
Mohan you are right, the wide converter is used to make the focal length wide i.e. it is 36mm without the converter and 27mm with the converter. This should help in landscape as well as portrait photography, especially those taken indoor in small rooms, since you will be able to see a much wider area with this converter.

Tele converter on the other hand would boost the maximum zoom by 1.5 times to 648mm, opposed to 432mm.

Basically you need to decide whether or not you need these capabilities i.e. you want a 27mm wide angle or 648mm zoom, do keep in mind that either of these add on lenses will make a slightly negative impact on the quality of the photographs.

I am not 100% sure, but I think you need converter lens adapter for either of these or for that matter the closeup lens to work. With converter lens adapter, you also have the option of using different types of filters like a polarizing filter, here is an interesting article regarding it, written by Tanveer, An often neglected accessory, a CPL.

Thanks Yogesh. That gives some idea on how to go about the lens.

One small correction here. For Portraits don't use wide angle lenses. Try using 85mm(35mm equiv)+ focal length so that the face is flattened. With wide angle the effects are interesting, but not pleasing.
OF course in group photographs, a wider lens may be useful, but then face size is usually small(large number of people) so it does not matter much
