planning to buy new cam.. A590IS ?
I am planning to buy a new cam. I have almost finalized on Canon A590 IS. I had S5IS on mind, but since this is my first cam, i though S5 IS might be overkill as for now..

Finalized this after reading a review on tech2.com. But before i take the word from them i thought i should be asking the experts here..

Since i am planning to upgrade to a DSLR 2-3 years from now, i am not planning to invest a fortune in this one. (probably thats the reason A720 IS is also not on the list..). So folks.. please pour in your comments on what you think about this camera, and are there any better options available in similar price range..

BTW i found rediff shopping selling this here. I wonder how they can sell it at sow lower rates than that mentioned on the official canon site! Do you recommend buying it (or for that matter any camera) from here?

Another note.. "IS" i assume stands for "Image stabilization". But the couple of canons i've seen which sport "IS" in their name have capability to attach a lens too.. does "IS" relate to this too?

Re: planning to buy new cam.. A590IS ?
Navin the rate is less because it’s a grey market product and only comes with 30day seller replacement warranty; oppose to the two year canon India warranty. Frankly you will get a better rate at a shop at lamington road, which deals in grey market products or better yet, ask a friend or relative coming from US to pick it up for you.

Better option would be to buy it through JJMehta, they have it with bill and 2 year canon India warranty + 2 GB SD card + a pair of Uniross 2100mah battery and charger (charger is a tad too slow) for around Rs. 10,700. http://www.jjmehta.com/pricelist/can...al_pricing.htm

If you do decide to buy the camera from them, check if they have it in their ebay store, they usually sell at a slight discount there.

With regards to the A590IS, it’s a good camera and has same level of manual controls as the A720IS and S5IS.

The only major difference between A590IS and A720IS is in the zoom and the fact that A590IS can only shoot videos at 20fps at 640x480res, while the A720IS can do it at 30fps.

With Canon S5IS, you will get even greater zoom and ability to zoom while shooting videos, but apart from that, it is pretty much the same. In fact the S5IS is in some aspects considered slower than the A720IS and A590IS.

Oh yes IS = image stabilization

@R3x : If you are going to buy with Bill and Warranty use jjmehta and if u want to go with grey market stuff, try Alpha @Irla as you are based in Mumbai..

I bought my S3IS from Alpha and I found it cheapest..

Thanks for the info Yogesh/Kunal I think i would rather go for the genuine warranty product than the grey market one.

Navin if you do buy online, make sure that you throughly check the warranty type. Majority of the online sellers provide their own warranty, which is as good as useless.

Re: planning to buy new cam.. A590IS ?
Went out inquiring about this cam in shops today. One of them says though JJ Mehta gives a 2 year warranty, they have their own technicians and does not send them to the company. Don't know whether i should believe him though... (i am not buying from him anyway.. he's quoting too much)
Found a deal with another shop.. he's giving it at 10200 with a 1 GB card and the canon warranty. I am considering this option.

Nothing of that sort, the camera that I bought from JJMehta came with Canon India warrant and I don't have to deal with JJMehta in case of a problem, I simply need to take it to the nearest canon service center.

Re: planning to buy new cam.. A590IS ?
Finally got the camera from a local shop here.
The Camera + 1 Gig card + a pair of Uniross 2100mah battery and charger + the camera case. Costed me 10600 bucks. Swiped it on my SBI Debit Card. SBI has an offer of 5% cash back on a swipe > 10,000 (but limited to Rs 1,000 of max cash back)
