Query on Uniross battery charger
Finally, got my self a basic P n S digicam few weeks back, its a Canon Powershot A470. Cam was bundled with 2 pairs of batteries(both rechargable ones). A pair Panasonic 2100mah batteries and a pair of Uniross 2100mah batteries which bundled with the Uniross Battery charger RC104423.

Problem started when I tried to charge the panasonic pair for about 12 hours, its was a mess, both batteries outer cover opened up and started to leak!
The charger had water like liquid all over it, even after 5 days am still finding traces of liquid coming out. Now, how do I get rid of it? I don't have the right tools to open up the charger nor am a electronics punter to fix it.

But, luckily the charger still works!am able to charge the other pair of batteries.

Now,few thing I want to know:
  • What is the average time to charge a pair of 2100mah batteries? The manual on the charger says 16 hours for 2100mah.
  • What liquid is it am I finding on the charger?(pic attached)
  • Has anyone faced similar problems?
  • Suggest me a pair of batteries.

Re: Query on Uniross battery charger
I had faced a similar problem with the Uniross charger overheating and the plastic getting deformed due to the heat. The batteries did not leak though. It was a set of 4 batteries and a Uniross sprint charger. I promptly took it back to the store where I had purchased it from and got a replacement. Mine is the Sprint quick charger and charges a pair of 2100 Mah batteries in 2 hours. The charging time differs depending on the charger you are using. Go by the manual.

Did you by any chance happen to use the charger on backup power from a non sine wave inverter? That's how the problem happened in my case. Suggest you take it back and get it replaced.

Re: Query on Uniross battery charger
AFAIK, Canon provides one pair of rechargable Uniross batteries and another pair of Normal Panasonic Alkaline Batteries (non-rechargable).

Did you say you charged the Panasonic ones? Make sure they are really rechargeable and not the normal alkaline.

  • What is the average time to charge a pair of 2100mah batteries? The manual on the charger says 16 hours for 2100mah.
The battery has a rating (probably something which reads x hours at y mVA) printed on it, and the charger has the output rating (probably simply mVA).. some simple math should get you there.
  • What liquid is it am I finding on the charger?(pic attached)
Probably out from the alkaline battery
  • Has anyone faced similar problems?
    hmmm.... me not really
  • Suggest me a pair of batteries.
Uniross is good. Recently bought a pair of Sanyo due to unavailabiity of Uniross at my place.. i think they are equally good

Re: Query on Uniross battery charger
Thanks for clearing my doubts guys.

@Salil,there was no power cuts when the batteries were charged. Anyhow, I'll take it back to service guys and get it fixed/replace/cleaned.

@Rx3, yes Panasonic ones and it appears am wrong about them, nowhere on the battery says it is rechargeable and I put them up for charging damn!

Time to buy a new pair.

Lol, Uniross battries and chargers are quite good though the one that you have now takes too long i.e. any where from 16-36hours (depending the battery capacity). You can easily get a Uniross 4-8 hour charger + 2 pairs of 2100/2300/2500mah rechargeable batteries for around 1k (they come in a package).

Has anyone used/compared the 2100 and 2500 mAH batteries? Is there a significant difference?

Re: Query on Uniross battery charger
Have compared the 2100 with 2300 and it seems 2300s take around 20-25 pics more.

Yup, i had both. And i prefer the 2100. 2500 does take few more pics. but has a lower life and poor low temperature performance compared to the 2100. When it comes to performace in freezing temperatures, my 2500 Sanyo was the worst.

Thanks, Salil. I sort of feel suspicious of some of the 'new' products.
Think I'll stay with my Panasonic & Sony 2100 mAH batteries for now!
