Soft photos after uploading for the contest, Help!!
Hi Admins/mods,
After uploading few of my photos into the contest I found that the quality of the images deteriorated a lot. Main concern is the softness in the photographs, they've become too soft after the upload. Also I can even see jpeg compression artifacts in one of the shot that I've uploaded. And note that all this issues are not there in the copies that I;ve in my laptop. Please look into the issue, I guess it's the uploading server settings which is aggressively using some lossy compression technique on the uploaded photographs.
Anyone else facing the same issue?
Yogesh, can you help me out here to solve the issue?
Regards,
konfuSed
PS: I was not sure if there is any such thread existed so created this new thread.

Re: Soft photos after uploading for the contest, Help!!
Kaushik photographs which are uploaded are resized to 800x800res with around 80% quality to ensure faster downloading time and that does reduces the quality a bit.
For instance, this photograph uploaded by you is originally 900x614 in res with a file size of 436.5KB, while the resized photograph is 800×546 in res with a file size of 80.59KB. For best quality it is a good idea to upload images within 800x800res so as that there is minimal loss during compression as server scripts aren't that great in resizing.
While the original photograph is available in same quality and resolution once you click on the photograph being displayed in the gallery, I’ll bump up the quality of resized images to ensure that a bit more of the quality is retained.

Yogesh, default vubll quality is 75, I suggest you make it to 90, this will fix things, no need to go above that

Re: Soft photos after uploading for the contest, Help!!
Tanveer we were earlier using 80% setting for the gallery, bumped it up to 95% in the morning and rebuilt the photos and it is still soft! Now we are back to 85% however all the photos uploaded till the morning are in 95% quality. I'll try and change the resizing script to see if that makes any difference.

Yogesh, most contests limit photo size(dimensions, not file size), so that nobody has unfair advantage. A limit of 800 on the longest side is a good bet, this way no resizing issues, and everybody floats in same boat.

Having a size limit is a good idea, sadly the stupid gallery script resizes even if the dimension and size are well within limits!

I am sure the vbull support forums will have an answer. Photography forums like dgrin etc., do not have this issue I think, from what I have seen

It’s a separate product so they can’t help it, one way is to turn the image quality to 100% but that just generates 20+kb thumbs!

Re: Soft photos after uploading for the contest, Help!!
As Tanveer said better to have restrictions on the dimensions only, not on the file size.
Yogesh, the photographs uploaded in the forum threads are not losing quality although they're being resized by the uploader. What's the settings there?

Re: Soft photos after uploading for the contest, Help!!
That's working on the default 75% image quality, but I don't think vBulletin resizes images if they are under the same quality. Doing a quality check now:
Edit: I think it looks sharper than what you had uploaded. Contacting the developer
