Midway A1 Restaurant, Delhi - Jaipur Highway
We had dinner at the Midway A1 Restaurant on the Delhi - Jaipur Highway, around 20 kms before Behror if you are coming from Jaipur. A clean and nice looking restaurant and I guess legacy of the Reliance A1 Plaza.

As we walked in and saw the menu, we got a slight shock! Paranthas were like Rs. 50 each and they were charging Rs. 10 per roti and around Rs. 160-180 for dal! Too expensive for a road trip like this, we thought. Just as we were about to move on, the waiter came and told us that the menu was printed wrongly and gave us another menu with hand corrected price. Which had normal rates like Rs. 50 for Dal Makhani and Rs.4 for rotis.

I don’t know if it was a genuine mistake in printing, a prank or a special menu for foreigners (Nadya had received the menu), but it left a bad taste in our mouth, which got further accentuated when I had their dal, which was too thick due to probably being boiled for like the 50th time and kind of looked and tasted somewhat old but not yet stale.

Plus side was that the service was courteous and fast and water bottles were priced at MRP. But based on my experience that night, I wouldn’t really think about stopping there again!

Stuff like this gives India and Indians a bad name, heck we had to shell out Rs. 30 for a bottle of 300ml cold drink (that too in its own bottle!) at a restaurant on the Kishangarh highway in 2006. Because it mainly catered to foreigners who get fooled in stopping there due to connivance of their bus/taxi drivers with the hotel staff!

Saar

Jaisalmer camel touts are exactly no better. Or any touristy place and taxi walas for that matter. India is a joy for the backpacker or the ultra rich. Those who're not local and in the middle get fleeced off.

Touts and others I can understand, but having a completely differently priced menu? That's the limit!

Kindly explain how the ultra-rich obtain things at the correct price.
Or is your definition of 'getting fleeced' different and is linked to an 'affordability level'?!

Hitanshu....methinks cynical comments do not value add always

I can understand the camel touts bit and even the taxi wallahs but this is the first time I'm hearing of one place having differently priced menus

Yes, I've seen separate menus in local language & in English in some European cities but different prices - that's a first!

Cynical my rearside. Not that everything in life is done to add value. Else I'd work 24x7
