Book Review: Ladakh travel guide by Harper Collins
Ladakh travel guide by Harper Collins is a treasure chest for any one heading to Ladakh.

I first came across this book, while I was preparing for my Ladakh trip last year. I must admit, although I had done quite a bit of research on the internet, nothing came close to this book. With comprehensive information covering route details, permits, place of interests, culture, weather conditions etc.

Although this book is written keeping in mind those traveling by bus and taxis with information about bus schedules, modes of transport available etc. However with detailed information provided about the routes, it makes an ideal companion for tourers traveling on their own. This guide also provides details about trekking routes, not to mention list of hotels, guest houses etc.

Although a large and comprehensive map is missing, but there are small and simple maps printed above the routes, with route details covering distances between villages and major stopover points. Add to that this book is compact enough to be carried around in a small day pack with ease. At Rs. 195 this book is a steal and a must for any one planning to travel to Ladakh.

As long as you are not looking for offbeat places you won?t be disappointed. The best thing I like about this book is the fact it is a straight forward travel guide and tells you what you need to know in order to reach and explore your destination. This is also the reason this book has only 90+ pages and yet contains so much information.

On that note, check out the exploring ladakh (sic) book from Rupa. Good treasure trove of information - may not be paisa vasool compared to this book, but is heavily detailed and very useful giving all the gyaan

Well guys i would recommend the LONELY PLANET INDIA GUIDE
it costs a bomb about rs. 1,400 or so in mumbai. havent bought one as yet but i have been reading it in my college library here.
i think once u have that book u can travel just about anywhere in india. they are qutie comprehensive and cover each place very well. what i liked is that they also provide details about travelling to the places that they cover.
eg. if one is looking at sarahan besides the places of interest, travel time from neighbouring places is provided with bus info such as simla sarahan 9 hrs. etc.
various maps are also provided.

for map references i use TTK maps. i think they are the best indian road map providers. if i recall correctly each book comes for about 30 - 35 rs. u can get an all india map or a state by stae map in good detail with distances mentioned.

Hitanshu how much does exploring ladakh costs?

Rohan Lonely planet is no doubt quite a good guide, however it is quite costly.

While creating the Ladakh destination guide I was closely studying this guide and comparing stats from my previous rides and other source and it turns out there are several anomalies with respect to distance between places and at places towns names are spelled wrongly. But still a good resource nonetheless.

I have this book with me. Had bought it last year when I was planning on ladakh.

Very well written. Lot of info on trekking, routes. places. hotels etc. very helpful for someone new to himalayas.have Harper collins guide for himachal pradesh too. that is also very nice.

But there is nothing like exploring new places and routes.....there must be a lot of unexplored routes that the maps hides.that should be fun.

Vicky there are lots and lots of places to explore in Ladakh, in fact there is just so much to explore that I haven't yet seen any comprehensive road maps or guide of Ladakh yet.
