Default GPS – MAPMYINDIA

Folks,

This Sunday I went for a GPS device from MAPMYINDIA, at present giving it a thorough test run within Delhi limits. The followings are my initial observations. I would request you all for some more ideas and also your reviews to test it more extensively. The model number is VX140. Along with this I would have attaching the hardware as well as software manual, but the upload limit for .pdf files are 500kb only.
My observations.

1) The signal reception quality is not satisfactory. It takes quite some time to connect to the satellites.
2) It doesn’t connect to the satellites if you are in any building or subway. ( Not very sure as of now. Will need to give it some further testing )
3) The map guide is good but further improvement is a must!
4) The maps need to be labeled in details.
5) The battery life is nearly 3 hrs per charge. The recharge time is some what near to 5 to 6 hrs.

This is all as of now. Will come up with more in future.

You will be able to get GPS signal only when there is clear vision of the sky.
Normally with highrises around, cold fix takes a lot of time.

Can an external antenna be connected?

If it has a MMCX port, then you can get external active antenna. Costs 10$ on dealextreme.

No, this model has no MMCX port for external antenna.

I am not sure whether other models from other brands in the range of 12k to 16k has similar options or not.

When I bought it, I didn't find any such model. May be costlier models will be having this feature.

Does it have a Sirfstar III chipset. My observation is that devices with this chipset offer a better connectivity.

I have a 100$ unit which has this port, and I found lots of models costing 250$ which do not. So its not w.r.t price, but manufacturer. Some give external antenna ports, some do not

SIRF is the GPS chipset. 372M means the processor is 372MHz
These units come in 2 flavors, the 372MHz Arm or the 400MHz arm. Most made in china kind of units(even ones from reputed manufacturer) use the Samsung chip with above config.
