Has any one used GPS while touring in India, if so then are the maps available for India? If no, then how does one uses a GPS without local maps, since I have read and seen few foreigners using it in India and it is available on order at few camping equipment stores in Delhi on order. But is it really worth it?

Trust me yaar. We guys can manage without it. Unless u plan to cover uncharted territory and need to get ur bearings right it is not all that useful and i dont think there will be something available for complete india at good prices. Best i know GPS Nav is available with a few city maps only.

It is not like GPS is a necessity; however having it should be fun. But the thing that makes me think twice is the availability of the maps for India. This is why I wanted to know if some one is using it, then how good are the maps available for it.

Hacket, as far as I know you need a proper city map for a gps to work in that city. If the map is correctly made then it should show the street as one way.

For Gramin GPS ,there is a distributor in delhi and mumbai .
But they charge like hell. They say thye give maps also but they are expensive . Basically ,there is no detailed maps for india ,btu for only few major cities . All the roads and gullis are still have to be mapped and digitized. Untill then we cannt do aything . Well i got a Gramin GPS etrex Legend got it from US through a friend ,costed me what costs on the web .Has world map inbuilt in it. It can show major cities like banglaore ,tumkur ,mumbai, delhi ,chennia and other cities .But not usefull, but can be used for trip and location marking. |

Hmm? that certainly is a big issue, after all half the utility of a GPS is helping you pinpoint where exactly you are.
