They sell the maps alone (for Garmin) for 7k, so...

Would love to have a look at it, if possible, please bring it to the next meet you are coming to.

Very good review.

BTW after my Leh trip, I realized that the in Phone GPS can not handle the kind of pressure independent units can take.

The only reason I still stick to my ASUS WM6 GPS, because of the flexibility to test different applications.

Thanks Rajiv, what issues did you face with your phone GPS? I am still contemplating on which GPS unit to get (in a bit distant future) and still haven't made up my mind, whether I want a phone based GPS or a Garmin hand held unit.

Yeah Rajiv, I am also interested in knowing what issues you faced with phone GPS as I am also using a phone GPS.

What I would like to know is, how does map my India device stand against Garmin.. From what i have read and understand is Garmin has better hardware and Map my India has better maps, right?

Pavan, MapmyIndia sells maps for Garmin. Though if you are buying an Indian Garmin unit, then it would be an extra expense.

yeah, I checked a Garmin unit yesterday here in Chandigarh. It cost around around 9K with maps but those maps does not look impressive as i am using same on my mobile.
Map my India maps for Garmin device are for around 7K so the total will be around 16 K, which is very expensive...

Eventually, Map my India sounds like a descent investment so far..

Following are the pros and cons for Windows based GPS phones, based on my 3 years of ownership of HTC 3300 and then ASUS

Cons:
1. Small screen is really difficult to handle. Total mess when you need the most and urgently.
2. If its your phone are well, during the trip, its really messy to move between screens for calls and maps. I carry another phone while on trip as primary phone.
3. Very low battery backup when GPS is on. Always have to on charge.

Pros
1. Portability, small and can be used when you are traveling on foot, just need to find way for battery backup.
2. Can use multiple applications.
3. If you do not use GPS very often, its best to buy. So that you do not invest on something always kept in glove box. Though if you are not really a fan of Window fans, price might be very same for on WM phone and (1 good Nokia Phone + GPS Device)

Though I might still stick to ASUS, as I only use GPS on long drives, which happens 2-3 times in a year. So no point having another fancy gadget in the car

Honestly for bikers, I still think mobile GPS as the best solution, on contrary due to its size

As for locating POIs, once you are connected with enough satellites, it doesn’t take too long, mostly in the region of a lower double digit seconds.
As I mentioned earlier as well they were Delphi NAV 200/300. Alas I sold them during recession
