Recommendation for a GPS
Manik is thinking of getting a GPS from UK, now as you all there are hardly any maps available for the GPS in India. So what he is primely looking for is

a unit that is sturdy

relatively light weight

water and dust proof

runs on a AA rechargeable battery

can store way points and maps (preferably with expandable memory)

compatible with google earth

And of course it shouldn't be too expensive. So if any one of you have any idea which model would fit these requirements than do reply.

You can look at

Garmin eTrex Legend Cx Handheld GPS Navigator

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...5Fi=B000F3DYUU

Will cost around 200 USD.

You can use this site to plot the gps tracks on GooGle Earth/Maps
http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/map?output_google

You gotta feed the Garmin tracks to this site.

Yogi : Just saved you 20 USD subscription for GooGle earth pro!! :P

Also you can use the provided Mapsource s/w along with the world map to plan. Much better than GooGle earth esp for hills in India.

My Garmin GPS 60Csx is on the way! Should have it by April 1st week.

See details here:

http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap60csx/

A handheld GPS with Sirf III chipset and enough features for me.

Visit:
http://www.malsingmaps.com/

For some details on how to load maps on to Garmin devices and use Google Earth with it.

PS: Free map of Malaysia and Singapore also available on that site

Hey! Where did you order it from (which site?).. and regarding maps for India, what are you doing. AFAIK Garmin only has the world map which has most major highways and such...

Bought it from
https://vesselprotectionproducts.com/

It was the only site that accepted my Paypal account :P and also had the lowest price. No one in Ebay and other sites was shipping to an unconfirmed address in USA.

Finally got it from that site with slightly under INR 15K on my credit card.

As of now I will not be having any detail maps for India. But its OK with me because the basic GPS will atleast have Town level detail in India (had seen nfsnfs's Garmin Etrex which was from USA also). For immediate use since I'm in Malaysia I have all maps for it (including Singapore).

Basically , note down your requirements before purchasing ! .

Bottomline is there are no maps for INDIA , if u want to buy GPS to get your way out in a road ,forget it . Rest you know what u cna use it for .

one more important thing is these suckers suck a lot of battery, at idle it may not consume power , but as u move the processor drain more power than it is recommended . Get a 12 volt cigarate adapter recommended by the respective manufacture , if u are smart enought build one your self and save some ...
ho to add that if its colour it sucks even more ....current as well as money
