Re: Fairs in Rajasthan
Please make this thread a rajasthan trip planner for a typical 7-8 days in rajasthan mostly on bike/car.I am planning a solo trip to rajasthan in month of early november around diwali time.Any suggestion for a traveller wid 7-8 days to spare assuming he starts from udaipur/ahmedabad and he is gonna miss pushkar mela due to schedule
One of my friends whos a rajasthani told me all good places in rajasthan are in the heart of rajasthan cities which is nightmarish for a biker who has saddle bags and tied luggage not to mention the "stares"
PS: I am planning to get a lonely planet India book but its cost is 1100 bucks. Is it worth it???
Of course thers should be some filmy istyle sanddunes, barren and deserted roads and camel caravans to photograph

Re: Fairs in Rajasthan
Lonely planet is worth its weight in gold
Just xerox right pages from office everytime, and carry it along with you!
Then again, make your own itinerary, rest we'll all help finetune.
If things go well, I should be there on 18/19th. What is possible downside of visiting early? besides seeing more animals? Last year, animals were mostly fnished when we rode down

Re: Fairs in Rajasthan
I have been a regular to the Pushkar fair since 2004, would be heading again this year if I am in Delhi!
@Amit: Get a second hand LP for typically 500-700 bucks, its worth more than what you think.
Cheers,
Shamik

Re: Fairs in Rajasthan
Just wanted to ask....what so special abt pushkar mela????I mean is it sensible to go at a time when there is lot of rush( a town of 14K people is bursting to its limits with a crowd of couple of lakhs)??
Is the pushkar mela hyped camel gathering when accommodation rates shoot up and there is a swarm of other tourists. (<---nice smiley)
Whether I make it during pushkar mela or not, some highlights of pushkar mela (first hand info abt why is pushkar so cool "kewl" destination)would be appreciated for benefits of readers/guests of this forum

Re: Fairs in Rajasthan
Amit: According to a popular Hindu mythology, the Hindu god Bramha, was once flying over the region when he realized that there is an important yagna he must perform and he landed in Pushkar. The yagna required his wife to be present, but as the god was travelling alone, he married a local woman and went ahead with the yagna. Meanwhile, Bramha's wife arrived in Pushkar and seeing him married to another woman, she was enraged and she cursed Bramha that we would only be worshipped in Pushkar and that too for 4 days of the year during which he was performing the yagna.
Thats the mythology, apart from that, the fact is, the only Bramha temple in the world is in Pushkar! Its Karthik Purnima when the god is worshipped, thats when the Asia's largest camel fair is also held in Pushkar. The colours, the people and the simplicity of the fair which is a major attarction for me.
I really think if you want to know more about your country, you really cannot avoid the people who make up this country. Pushkar in that sense, where you get a great chance to experience rural cultures and people of Rajasthan! So, go there with an open mind, shed those prejudices and you would come back with a smile that will last.
Cheers,
Shamik
