Hey everyone; I'm up in Taos right now and am doing a LIVE report from my trip! Thanx to Verizon Broadband I can broadcast anywhere anytime...well as long as I have nuff battery power
I'm training for my trip to Leh next year so will try to do as many of these high altitude trekking as I can before I go. I'm testing my new gear to see how well everything holds up and to see what I really need at high elevation in the cold weather. Temperature outside is: 20 degrees Farenheit and -6.6 Celcius. I will start from the beginning with the gear shot and continue on. You are all here with me! It took over three hours from Santa Fe to drive north on a winding road following the Rio Grande River. I saw some eagles flying high in the canyon but there was no place to stop for photos. This is one of the most beautiful but deadliest roads in New Mexico...I have lost family members and friends on this treacheous road. Today I reached the base of Kachina Peak 10,200 feet and will continue up tomorrow to Wheeler Peak elevation 13,141 feet (4,005 m). OK nuff talking and on with the pictures eh. PS I have no idea how to insert text in between the pix so I will just attache series of five photos and give a short description...hope that's ok.

Thank you Akshay...yep I'm planning Stok Kangri Summit so got to get in shape! I'm a crappy photographer so please excuse the unedited pix!
Here comes the next batch of pictures. First picture is of Taos Gorge...a baby version of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Next up is some shots of Taos Pueblo Mountain...Reservation land! My sister lives at the base of this mountain. Only Tribal members are allowed to summit. There is a pristine lake up at the top called Blue Lake...this is a sacred body of water to the Natives here. Yearly pilgrimages on horseback are conducted to pay homage and make offerings to this lake. Next are pictures of a community called R.E.A.C.H. They are completely Off the Grid and self sustainable. The houses are built right into the granite mountain itself! My friend has a house up there I hiked up to help him with some construction. The road goes up only halfway and you MUST have 4X4 just to get to the base. You hike up to your house the rest of the way and in winter these homes are completely cut off from the rest of the valley! The view from up there is magnificent especially during a lightening storm! |

Thank you Sir ji...more pix coming up...
First pic is looking Northwest towards The Four Corners area. On a sunny clear day you can see for hundreds of miles! Second pic...I was in the middle of the road to get this shot. This is the road to my fav lil town called Aroyo Seco... also where Julia Roberts has her home. Third pic is driving up the road to the base of Kachina Peak. Fourth pic of the magnificent trees and lastly...the trailhead to Williams Lake. Mountain Lions were spotted here earlier today. Hmmm...never had Mountain Lion meat before... |

Marvelous pics! I never knew such mountain houses existed in US! They hike up everyday to those houses? Incredible. I am sure people over here are very fit!
