3000rpm is what the rev counter says, but up at this insane altitude it sounds like a lot more. Its dead all around, and in reverence, even the wind seems to have died.
The is groan of the struggling engine , the scruffing of hard rubber on rocks, the clang clang as the wheels spin them and they hit the skid plates, the roaring of twin fans, and the turbo whistle, as it tries to suck in what little air it can get.
We have been climbing for minutes now, but progress is painfully slow. Even at 1st low its an effort and the scores of army trucks or whatever monsterous machines which run their have rendered the track unusable. As I crane my neck, trying to avoid the millionth rock, my peripheral vision spots and anomaly. The temp guage has creeped slightly above half mark, and then suddenly, the dreaded yellow service light blinks, and the engine is on limp home mode, will not go above 1200-1300rpm. On the 30 degree incline over 5400mts above sea level, its time to shut down......
