Day 10, 11th September 2007: Leh - Lamayuru - Kargil

Today all but couple of riders were supposed to head towards Suru and Zanskar Valleys. However one by one, all backed out, citing one excuse or other. Most innovative one was from Manik, that he couldn't ride today, because his shoes were wet .

Worse thing was, by the time everyone confirmed their pull out from the Zanskar leg, it was already 11:30am and due to all the run around, I haven't been able to have any breakfast, apart from a cup of tea in the morning. Decided not to waste anymore time, headed out for the petrol pump, got the bike tanked up and went to a mechanic to get the engine oil changed and called home, informing I was leaving Leh and would be riding back alone. Purchased a packet of biscuits for en route from the STD shop and left Leh at around 12:30pm.

With no one to look out for and worry about, I was riding at a pretty fast pace today, with the hopes of reaching Kargil by evening. First break came after Nimmu, at this picturesque village for a bit of photography and water.

En route to Lamayuru, I decided to take the Hangroo Loop route, even though it was slower and rougher, but it had better views than the lower route. Next major break came at this abandoned village near Lamayuru.

Followed by another one, just above Lamayuru Village, where I had managed to reach in less than three and a half hours from Leh.

Half an hour later I decided to stop just before Fotu La and eat biscuits I had purchased from Leh to satisfy my hunger and click a photograph of the beautiful mountains around me.

From Fotu La to Mulbek it was a non stop ride as I knew it was probably the last place where I could get a decent meal for the day (Kargil vegetarian's hell). After a longish stop to eat my breakfast cum lunch cum dinner, it was time to move on.

Managed to reach Kargil with sunlight still remaining, got the bike's tank filled and headed for the same dump I had stayed at twice before and crashed in for the night.

Thanks Srini, as of yet no group rides are planned, if and when they are, they will be posted well in advance on BCMTouring.

Completely agree with you on this one. If you are not visiting Lamayuru its better to take the upper road.
I took the lower road in 2006 but opted for the upper one in 2007 and found it to be better.

Did you count the switchbacks in this route... its very close to the Gata loops in no.
