Day – 2 (31st May)

Woke up in the morning around 7AM and had breakfast in Manali. Again aloo Parata on road side hotel. Took few pictures near the river, view was amazing. Had first glance of snow mountains from road. I withdraw money from ATM and started to Sarchu as per our plan. The first half way from Manali to Rohtang Pass is good, Still its time consuming. Later I realized we are going to high attitude. The scenery become more and more good as we passing the half way to Rohtang Pass. I see lot of shops on the way renting Boots & Snow suits.

I’ve seen two beautiful places to have snacks. Will add the photos for much better understanding.

While reaching Rohtang Pass, I see the snow in India for first time. Temperature decreased and bad roads started. Snow is melting and water is floating on the roads. That’s the first experience of riding on snow and bad roads at high attitude.

Reached Rohtang pass around 11AM. Seen huge traffic Jam with Cabs. As we are on two wheeler able to squeeze in and overtake the traffic. Spent sometime in taking pictures in Rohtang Pass and moved further. Now I don’t see any traffic after Rohtang pass. We stopped and took few more pictures as no traffic. After that we continued our journey.
But Now I’m in bad shape, I was not able to ride with Gloves I have, it took 10 minutes for me to drive 2 kilometers. My shoes & socks are wet and making me feel more shivering. Taking breath is becoming heavy. Stopped for a while I removed my socks and started the journey, then I felt comfortable. With in short time we reached Koksar. I see bright sun there. We stopped there for snacks n tea. I came to know about the lifestyle in LEH & other places. They work for 6months and rest 4-6 months they just sit in home due to heavy snow between October & April. If any emergency Helicopter will come to pick the patients it seems.

We took few polythene bags in Koksar and used it as socks. We headed towards Sarchu. On the way we stopped at Tandi and filled the petrol tank. Rajesh & Umair filled extra petrol in Cans. On the way we found two foreigners who is traveling on bullets from Jammu, Ssrinagar, Leh & Manali, they from Belgium it seems. They advised going to Sarchu is not good option as its too late and more water floating on barlachala. Afternoon around 3PM we stopped at Keylong and had lunch. After good lunch, we continued our journey, soon we crossed Zipsa and reached Darcha by evening 5.30PM. In Darcha bridge was under contruction, so we need to cross the water stream. It was thrilling. First I crossed, later Rajesh and then Umair.

After reaching Darcha, Rajesh enquired and found that it will be too cold at Barlachala and its dangerous in traveling in the evening as more snow melt in day time and more water flow on the roads. I was very much interested travel further and reach Sarchu by night, but Rajesh & Umair stopped me. They said tomorrow we can reach LEH at any cost.

We stayed in small dhaba, they had single room with 6-7 beds. Charged 100 Rupees per head, it includes dinner. As we have time started walking back to bridge and river taken few pictures.

Around 7PM I saw Bharat (BCMTian) & his cousin Mehul came back from water stream, they are traveling to Manali from Leh. As water flow is more, they want to cross it morning. They stayed at same place and had good chit chat.

Bharat traveled all the way from Vadodara to Jammu, Srinagar, Leh & Surrroundings. Now he is traveling back to Manali & Vadodara. He shared his experiences, it was good to hear about the road and places.

Had Noodles and slept off early.
