Wink Delhi to Jammu in 10days

I always likes quotations, one of them is “The jouney of thousand miles starts with a single step

Even though I’m not good at writing, only one thing keeps me to start this is to just share. Its my first travelogue, if any mistakes or corrections please let me know.

About me
I’m from Hyderabad, who never traveled to North. I like long drives, clicking photos and sharing with friends.

Here are few clicks which I clicked earlier.

Story behind Leh Trip.

Feb 09
I just know about name Leh, Ladakh, nothing more than that. I’m movie freek I mean I collect movies and store in harddisk and watch it. One day I copied few movies and clips from my cousin and found interesting 8-10minutes video about LEH. That’s the first time I came to know something about LEH. Two guys visited LEH on two bikes (pulsur and unicorn). Felt they simply super who achieved something.

Mar 09
In First week of Apr, in discussions with my cousin I told him about the LEH. And then in same week I googled it to just to know the distance. And found interesting travelogue by omvaikul. (Bike Trip to Leh – Ladakh – Khardung La: Finally Dream Ride turns into Reality – Mumbai to Leh (Khardung La) Om’s Weblog – A Guide for Motorcycle Enthusiasts, India) was kept on reading it for next 2 days.

Then few days later read yogeshsarkar blog, was impressed with the photos and locations. Decided I should visit LEH once.. but didn’t decide when to go )

Apr 09
I showed these blog sites to one of my colleague, he said you plan and let me know. As I got company to travel I started looking more information about the LEH and found bcmtouring. Registered immediately and gone through some threads about LEH, seen few guys planned trip from Hyderabad. Tried to reach them, but no luck as they have different dates and plans.

After few changes suggested by Anup & Yogesh I finalized my itinerary. Then enquired about the trains. As I have less days of leave, planned to travel Jammu by train from Warangal (150Kms away from Hyderabad) from there by bike.

Booked train tickets for two to Jalandar from Warangal on 30th May and return from Jammu to Warangal on 8th June.

May 09
Started spending more time on bcmtouring and getting all updated information. Meanwhile so many changes happen. My colleague dropped from the trip, then I contacted my cousin. He showed interest in the LEH. As my onword journey tickets are not getting confirmed, I changed my itinerary and canceled the tickets to Jalandar and booked tickets to delhi for 28th May in tatkal quota.

I exchanged my bike(pulsur 150cc) with My cousin’s(Pulsur 200cc), who suppose to travel with me keeping in two things in mind. It has more power and tubeless tyres.

Gave Bike for general servicing and bought few emergency medicines. (didn’t take diamox).

On 27th May came to know that my cousin didn’t turn up. So decided to travel alone till delhi and meet bcmtouring fellows.

On 28th May Afternoon booked the bike as parcel to Delhi. In the evening packed my stuff in two bags one is backpack and another one is small bag with eatables. Family members gave me sendoff in local railway station at 9PM.. reached Hyderbad railway station and made sure my bike is in parcel coach. Started Journey from Hyderabad at 10.45PM.

Had tough time in train with heat in Bhopal and surroundings.. but my excitement for Leh doesn’t care all these.

On 30th May morning by 5AM I reached Delhi (H.Nizzamudin) Already I made contact to RajeshPunia(BCMTian) who is traveling from Hirsar, Haryana and Umair(BCMTian) from Delhi on same day to Leh.

Journey Starts…
As no petrol in my bike, waited for Umair, who suppose to join me at railway station by 5.30AM and start to Manali. As its getting late I had my Breakfast near station.. garam garam Aloo Parata. Umair reached station around at 6.50AM and bought 2 liters of petrol. Checked my ODO meter its showing 12054. We Headed to Manali via Karnal bypass. Meanwhile Mukul (BCMTian) called me, even he is starting from Delhi on same day with another friend.

Got Cheated
After traveling 30kilometers I went to HP petrol bunk to fill the tank. As per my bikes mileage there should be more than liter petrol in it.. but still that guy poured 17.5Liters of petrol in tank. As far Im aware pulsar 200cc tank capacity is 15liters. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Met Mukul
As umair didn’t had breakfast, we stopped at a Big dhaba in Murthal at 8AM. Mukul came and met us and informed that his friends Audi 350 is giving trouble they move little slow to Manali. We started again and reached Karnal and it started raining bit. As I don’t have anything to cover spent sometime to cover my backpack.. But the polythene which I have is too small.. so left it as it is. And started the journey.

Around at 11AM we reached Ambala and we met RajeshPunia. Started hearing sounds from my bike and went to bajaj service center on the way. Came to know chain became so hard it started making noise, applied OIL and all set to go.

Caught by Police
Now we three reached Chandighar and One Sardar police caught me at signals and stated my bike registration Number is bit Big and demanded 1300/- Rajesh & Umair crossed the signals, they came back and requested the police wala and gave finally 100/- Afterthat we avoided main road and took alternative road to reach Ropar. Had lunch at Ropar with rotis bought from Home.

Reached Manali
After that now and then Rajesh and Umair were stopping to adjust the Bags which was tied at back side of the bike. Stopped some place waiting for each other and reached Kullu by 9pm. After some discussions we headed to Manali and got room for 600/- had dinner and slept around 12.00.

Total Distance Travelled on Day1 - 576Kms.
Weather : Cloudy
Roads : Good

On day1, I lost my soft pillow which i tied it my bag . Will add the pics soon.

As far as I know, even the new pulsars take in around 17-18 liters of petrol. The old one used to take a little over 19 liters, even though they were rated at 18 liter capacity.

Ah, the ever so vigilant Chandigarh cops, they always make you aware of your presence, unless you make them aware of yours first i.e. go and talk to them.

Looks like your first day was action packed, can’t wait to read about next few days

Mentioned capacity is usually less than the actual capacity due to various factors. The original lot of Pulsars were supposed to have a 18 liter tank and in practice it is a little over 19 liters and the same I think is also true for Karizma, which has a mentioned capacity of 15 liters and takes in around 17 liters of fuel.

congrats Suresh, lovely write up. Cant wait to read more of your log.

Guys, is this a perpetual problem with cops in Chandigarh? I am planning to drive there this weekend and have recently put film in my car (50% visibility all around); do you think there will be a problem there because of this? Someone told me that film in banned in Chandigarh

The cops in chandigarh are indeed very visible at all the round abouts and are even known to challan drivers driving with a high beam within the city limits!!
