    Mubarak Mandi Complex

The complex has a history as old as 150 years back. It was a royal residence of Dogra rulers. The palaces are built as a group of buildings around the courtyard. Successive Dogra rulers added to the complex in size. The buildings were used as the residences of the royal Dogra families. The complex has halls and galleries which were used for official functions and public events.
See the state these buildings are in today.

Re: Mubarak Mandi Palace Heritage Complex, Jammu : A Crumbling Edifice

The Mubarak Mandi Palace is situated in the walled city complex. There are many buildings of architectural excellence in this complex. The oldest structure here was built in the year 1824.

It is a prominent tourist attraction of the Jammu city. The architectural getup of the structures of this complex is a combination of the Rajasthani, European Baroque and the Mughal style. Such rich influences have made the appearance of the structures elegant and exquisite.

The most attractive part of this complex is the Sheesh Mahal. The appearance of this building is stunning and gorgeous. The palace complex used to serve as the residence of the royal family of the Dogra kings. It has a heritage of 150 years to be proud of. You will get some of the most fascinating views of the city of Jammu on one side and the Tawi River on the other from this palace complex. Thus it can be said that the location was carefully selected by the royal personalities.

The Dogra Art Museum is now located in the Pink Palace of this complex. This museum preserves some of the most beautiful miniature paintings of various styles from this region. There are about eight hundred paintings stored in this museum. Most of the miniatures stored here belong to the Kangra, Jammu and Basohili School of art.

Another important attraction of the museum in the Mubarak Mandi Palace is the gold painted bow and arrow of emperor Shah Jahan.

Jammu came under the control of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji in the 19 century and became a part of the Sikh Empire. Maharaja Ranjit Singh soon appointed Gulab Singh Ji the ruler of Jammu.
the British recognized Maharaja Gulab Singh, the strongest ruler north of the Sutlej River, as ruler of Jammu and Kashmir. But for this he had to pay a sum of Rs. 75 Lakhs in cash Maharaja Gulab Singh is thus credited as the founder of Jammu and Kashmir.

    Hope for the future?

The age old Mubarak Mandi Complex, the remanent of rich historical background in Jammu, is now being conserved and developed in its original architectural form as a self sustaining tourist destination and socio cultural heritage centre.

This will impart the city of Jammu a distinct identity and to further contribute to its economic development. The projected cost of the conservation and restoration is about Rs 120 crore and work on the project is expected to be completed in a period of about five years.
Mubarak Mandi Complex is actually a brilliant combination of Mughal and Dogra architect but unfortunately it is presently in a state of physical deterioration.
The main attractions of the complex would be Royal Dogra Palace, Baddi Deodi, Marble Hall, Raja Ram Singh’s Palace, Royal Courts, Pink Hall and Main Deodi.
A big museum with varied sections exhibiting armoury collections, Toshakhana, replica of temples of Jammu, manuscripts, photo gallery, heritage furnitures, artifacts jewellery, coins paintings etc is also being constructed to give the people a complete picture and taste of royal heritage and history of Jammu region.

Refreshing areas like restaurants with the panaromic view of River Tawi, income generating units like emporium for sale of products from all three regions of the State which would add value to the monument are also being set up.
