Day 3: Khajuraho, Adivart Tribal and Folk Art Museum and ASI Museum

After coming back to the room and freshening up a little, it was time to move out again, this time to the museums in Khajuraho.

First up was the Adivart Tribal and Folk Art Museum.

When I went inside the museum I found no one at the ticket counter, door closed (not locked) and lights turned off! For a moment I thought about just heading inside, but then decided against it and started looking for someone but was unable to find anyone after a brief and somewhat limited search.

Thought that since it was Christmas, the museum must be closed and was about to leave, when I spotted someone. Walked up to the guy and asked him, whether or not the museum was open, he replied smilingly, “yes it is open sir, come with me.”

He walked into the ticket counter and issued me a ticket (Rs. 10) and went ahead and opened the gates and started switching on lights.

Once inside, I spotted this lovely hut at the first room, decorated with tribal art. It was a representation of a traditional Sarguja House of the Rajwar community.

Further inside I spotted a few lovely paintings, really beautiful work done by tribal/folk artists.

While I wanted to take more photographs, I knew photography wasn’t allowed inside the museum and even though the person I had met a while back was running back and forth to start all the lights and was now also busy in escorting a couple, who had just come in, it just felt wrong. Especially since that person was really nice and slightly naïve.

So in the end, decided to keep the camera in my pocket and bought their guidebook (costs Rs. 20 and has photographs of most of the things on display and also text about them) and also a greeting card, which contained photograph of a wood statue.

Asked for permission to take photograph of the terracotta elephant at the entrance and moved on, feeling content.

Next up was the ASI Museum, and when I tried to enter there, I was asked to show ticket to the western group of temples, which also happens to be the ticket for the ASI Museum. Had to ride back to the hotel room (around 100mtr away) and fetch the ticket to gain entry to the museum.

Checked with the staff there, whether or not photography was allowed and got a negative reply. So had to just capture the things on display with my eyes. The guys at the ASI Museum weren’t that naïve and sent a guard in to watch over me (!#%@#$^#), add to that there were security cameras as well.

ASI Museum had statues from various temples of Khajuraho and nothing much else, so was somewhat disappointed. However was delighted with the rather large museum and lovely light inside it, which was perfect for photography. But here, forget about photographing the articles on display at the museum, one isn’t even allowed to photograph its building from outside! Not that one would really want to capture it from that outside, as it isn’t really an impressive building, but still I found this rule to be rather stupid and made the ASI Museum so not worth the visit, since all you see there, is already on display at the temples!

Anyways, it was now time to head to the Jain Temples...
