Royal Enfield: discriminating against Indian consumers!

When I heard about the impending launch of Royal Enfield Electra–XS in United Kingdom I was saddened by the fact that once again Royal Enfield is launching a better performing model overseas, while in India they continue to provide same old models!

Electra-XS will be manufactured in India but will not be on sale in India, it will be shipped half way around the world and will be sold there, while in India they will continue to sell their boring old models! If it wasn’t for the Indian Army and Indian consumers Royal Enfield India would have shut shop in the same manner as its parent company in United Kingdom did. Despite this fact they continue to develop new model for overseas markets, while completely ignoring the Indian consumer.

Here is a look at the specification of the Royal Enfield Electra-XS which would be shown in NEC Motorcycle show from 27 October to 5th November:

Engine – 499cc four stroke single cylinder OHV
Bore and stroke – 84mm x 90mm
Power – 27.5 BHP at 5500 rpm
Fuel consumption (approx) – 75 mpg
Electrics – 12 volt
Ignition – electronic TCI
Starter – electric and kick
Transmission – 5 speed constant mesh
Dimensions (LxWxH) – 2110 x 700 x 1067mm
Fuel tank capacity – 14.5 L (inc.1.25 L reserve)
Suspension front – telescopic hydraulic fork
Suspension rear –hydraulic dampers
Front brake – single disc, 280mm dia.
Rear brake – 6 inch drum
Weight – 187 Kg

A look at the Royal Enfield UK Site and Royal Enfield US site reveals a lot of models that Indian Royal Enfield fans have been dieing to get their hands on. However despite this Royal Enfield has paid no heed to them! Â

I say this is the height of discrimination and should be stopped with immediate effect, this is not only insulting to all the Indians but this is particularly insulting to die hard Royal Enfield fans!

  1. I think a 500 cc bike will have few takers in India. Probably too expensive

  2. Quite true, however it can be offered as a built on order motorcycle. In that case only investment required from RE would be approval by the Indian government for the sale of this motorcycle and when a person books it, they can go ahead and manufacture it from the existing parts bin that is being used to develop Electra-XS from UK market.
