I had been using Navi maps (product of map my india).
You need to pay Rs 600 for a lifetime license and then you can download maps for various zones of India. Now they also offer maps for Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
While driving in remote areas you need two things, enough battery in mobile and a decent GPS signal.
I usually use it when driving around remote areas.
