This is a dedicated thread for the road status and condition of the crucial Manali - Leh Highway, one of the only two motorable land routes connecting Ladakh with rest of India.

Current status of Manali – Leh Highway: Open

Permit for Rohtang Pass: Good news for those planning to go to Ladakh, Lahaul, Pangi and Spiti. Online permit registration for going beyond Rohtang Pass is now open and can be done from the following link, http://admis.hp.nic.in/ngtkullu/BeyondRohtang/InformatoryScreen. The permit would only be issued to vehicles which are less than 10 years old and this permit isn’t for people who are just going to up to Rohtang Pass (if you return from Rohtang, your vehicle will be blacklisted.)

As here is the good news.
    snow snow snow.
    have fun guys.

This is 2017, and you cannot get a bette pic of snowfall.
Sadly cause the road is closed you cannot get to Rohtang.
but you can still enjoy snow in the lower part of the road where there is more than enough snow to have loads of fun.
so get to Manali and have all the fun you want with snow.

Manali leh should be done religiously now because after rohtang tunnel project gets over the jispa -darcha-shongti la-padum road will be tried to be made the new operational road for leh.

Hopefully by 2020 the Tunnel will be opened for public
Darcha Leh route may never come up, or maybe after another 50 years. the present route is more important and strategic, cause of location of Chushul, we have already fought a war with China here.

These projects take years and years if not a decade to materialise.
    funds are released piecemeal.
add to it problems created by NGT,
for the Rohtang Tunnel, on which work had to stop, cause of NGT, cause NGT was not allowing them to break a designated area for rocks.
a tunnel need huge amount of stones. Exactly from where is this stone supposed to come.

So what happens beyond this tunnel will take 10 t0 20 years.

That is true, rohtang tunnel itself is an example of this but tunnel under shongti la is a distant dream but work on road is at its full pace(just like work on DBO),from darcha the road had been made till the top but from padum side it is delayed.I hope atleast for military it becomes functional,it will reduce congestion on manali leh highway.

From the looks of it, there is another snow storm approaching,
my guess it is stronger than the one we just experienced.
should hit by Sat or Sun which is 14th or 15th, so a good round of snowfall around 15th or 16th or even 17th

another day or two it will become clear on intensity of snow, and when it actually arrives

    happy landings.

This is the approaching real bad Western Disturbance and this prediction is for Sat 14Jan17.

Watch out, and be prepared where ever you are.
This is what is called Bad Ass. It has created -30 deg in Europe and havoc, and it is now going to hit us.
The size of this WD can be seen by the fact it is affecting right down to Arabian Sea, so it will collect the moisture necessary to feed it and then drop it as huge quantities of snow all over, I mean all over.
In all probability the sky will start to hint of its approach by Sat or Sun, and by Monday 16Jan17 it will be full blast over us.
If you planning a trip to mountains, get there before this arrives, once it arrives, you wont make it to destination, be reading to heat up your food by putting it on the radiator of your car when you stuck on roads for extended periods of time. If you have kids, better carry enough food etc for them.

If you know of friends who have plans for those dates, warn them. Get to destination before it hits, OR, delay till after the WD has passes and the authorities have had time of one or two days to clear roads. But if you are the adventurous kind, then this is the time to experience the adventure of your life, get on the road, and be on the road when hits.
