Starting this thread for the latest update about the opening, closing and road condition of the all important Sriangar – Leh Highway.

Srinagar - Leh Highway current status: Closed

Update 24th April: As per a statement issued by BRO, Srinagar – Leh Highway is now expected to be cleared of snow by the 15th of May. This effectively means that the Srinagar – Leh highway might actually reopen in the third or last week of May for the tourist traffic!

Srinagar - Leh Highway has finally closed for the season, after heavy snowfall. The highway is likely to reopen in late April or early May for vehicular traffic.

The 434-km-long strategic Srinagar-Leh highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the Kashmir valley, has been officially closed for winter months to avoid any accidents following fresh snowfall and slippery road conditions due to below freezing temperatures.

Official sources said that the highway has been closed for winter months after the areas along the highway including Sonamarg, Drass and Zojila Pass experienced heavy snowfall.

The highway, which usually remains closed from 1st week of December for about four to five months every year, had remained open for a longer period this time around because of the dry weather, officials said.

They said that Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Ahmed Khan had earlier asked the Beacon authorities to review the road conditions after which the decision to close the road from January 04 was taken.

In an official communique in this regard, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, had informed that Sonamarg–Gumri (Zojila pass) shall remain closed for vehicular traffic of all types from January 04, 2017 till further notice.

“In view of snowfall on higher reaches, extreme cold temperature and slippery road surface on 10 Km on either side of Zojila pass road, Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri as intimated by the chief engineer Beacon, it is hereby notified for information that the road Sonamarg-Gumri (Zojila Pass) shall remain closed for vehicular traffic of all types w.e.f 04-01-2017, till further notice,” reads the order by the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir.

SSP Traffic Rural, Fayaz Ahmed told Greater Kashmir that the road has been officially closed for all types of vehicular moment on the directions of Div Com Kashmir.

Just received this message from BRO Jawahar Tunnel

.Traffic Police issues advisory for movement of vehicles on Srinagar-Jammu highway :
    JAMMU, January 05:
There has been intermittent rain/snowfall today on 05.01.2017 at Jawahar Tunnel and other areas of the NHW. This trend is expected to continue in coming days as well as per the advisory issued by the Meteorological Department. It is quite likely that during night hours, water on NHW freezes due to dip in temperature during night hours as a result vehicles will start skidding/slipping on the road especially near JT leading to accidents. Under these circumstances plying of traffic on NHW during night hours would not be feasible, traffic officials said.

In view of the above tomorrow on 06.01.2017, subject to fair weather and good condition of road, traffic on Jammu -Srinagar National Highway will ply both ways with the following restrictions:-

From Jammu (Nagrota), Srinagar bound passenger vehicles will be allowed to move only between 0300 hours to 1400 hours while heavy vehicles will be permitted only between 0330 hours to 1300 hours. However, the movement of oil tankers shall be allowed upto 1400 hours. No Srinagar bound passenger vehicle and oil tanker will be permitted to cross Udhampur (Jekhani Chowk) after 1600 hours while no heavy vehicle will be permitted after 1500 hours

From Qazigund light motor vehicles shall be permitted to move towards Jammu only between 0800 hours to 1500 hours while heavy vehicles shall be permitted only between 0830 hours to 1400 hours. However, the movement of fruit laden heavy vehicles only shall be allowed upto 1500 hours.

A family member was to leave today from Jammu, but it has been raining since yesterday. Looks like the travel would have to be postponed for a few days.

Thank you for the regular updates in the Jammu-Srinagar highway.
