In 2017, i went to Manali from 7 to 11 March,
again, was chasing a snow storm
it was fantastic. Snow fall daily either during day, or night.
and with sun peeking out daily for a while.

looking at BBC weather report, there seem stop be nothing much coming up in next 10 days at least ,
that will make it 28 Mar, and almost the end or March,
unless the last 3 days of March springs a surprise,
or a surprise may happen in 1st week April.
it has happened in recent past.
Otherwise, guys planning road trip early Jun this year will be lucky with less issues on the road,
but i always, Don't plan before 7 Jun, and best is to plan 15 Jun onwards.
there you won't get any surprised,
BUT,
no matter how good your plan,
the Himalayas can always surprise you.
that is what happened to me in 2013 road trip from Leh to Keylong,
had to spend night at Sarchu, surprise, surprise,
and woke up to a sprinkle of snow on my tent.

happy landings

Border Roads Organisation starts snow clearing work on Manali-Leh highway

Mar 13, 2018, 22:17 IST
Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has started snow clearing work on Manali-Leh highway. Efforts are also being made to open the Manali- Leh highway from the other side of Rohtang Pass in the Lahaul valley. Heavy snow had covered Manali- Leh highway causing disruption to traffic. Residents have been facing difficulty in carrying out their daily chores due to lack of transportation. Bulldozers and heavy machines have been pressed into the service to remove the snow.

Hello Mountaineers,

I would like to know the best time to go to manali Leh Highway. will it open in the month of April or we may have to wait till JUNE?

This year the Manali – Leh Highway should reopen in May. April is completely out of the question, since even after the Rohtang Jot is thrown open, the administration takes at least a couple of weeks or more to declare the Manali – Leh Highway open. And the Rohtang hasn't yet been opened.

Rohtang Pass is all set to reopen within a week. BRO teams from Manali and Koksar have almost reached the top and only 700 meters need to be cleaned now. In case of bad weather, reopening of the pass can be further delayed.

Manali – Leh Highway will take longer to reopen for traffic, since Baralacha La and other passes en route need to be cleared of snow.

Thank you so much. I was planning to till Keylong on 19th April - 21 April. Do you feel the route till Keylong will be open? - How much further than Rohtang can I plan to go preferably with a night stay option.

PS: I will be traveling with 2.5 year son.

It should be open, unless the Manali Administration decides to delay opening of the pass this year as well. Though please keep in mind, road is likely going to be in bad condition and might even have black ice i.e. very slippery. Go at max till Jispa.

Rohtang Pass has been cleared of snow and from today it will be open for light vehicles. Initially only the locals i.e. residents of Lahaul Valley will be allowed to cross the pass. Add to that, intially the Rohtang Pass will remain one way i.e. on one day traffic will allowed from Manali side and the next day from Lahaul. Once the road is wide enough, it will be opened for two-way traffic.
