This is the 2018 road status thread for Srinagar – Leh Highway, featuring the date of opening of the road as well as the latest road conditions, regularly updated by the travelers.

Srinagar - Leh Road Status: Closed.

The Highway is expected to reopen in the first week of May 2018. We will update the first post, as soon as more updates come in.

It is almost always a good idea to go via the Srinagar route and come back via Manali, because:

1. You gain altitude gradually, hence lessen the risk of getting hit severely by AMS (read Ladakh AMS Survival Guide).

2. If you’re driving your own vehicle, then you won’t have to apply for permit to cross Rohtang Pass, if you’re coming from Leh. However, if you start your journey from Manali, you will need this permit.

Thanks a lot for your kind advice Yogesh. It helped me a lot, if plan to travel, will surely try to stay at Boulevard Road and will also ask for Itinerary, once everything is finalised.

Regards,
Alok

Hi Alok and any one else willing to embark on Leh holiday in 2018.
Traveling to Ladakh just ABT the same time.
Will be with a friend in a Innova. Or a Xylo.
Starting from Jodhpur.
Less snow
Passes likely to open early.
Let's see.
Can travel together in our vehicles.
Unless some more people want to join. This is Maj MS Jamwal here. Pl get in touch.

Weather for Tomorrow.
Saturday 3 Feb 2018

those heading to Kashmir, could expect land slide on Udhampur Banihal stretch,
and road widening is on to 4 lane, so you can imagine the amount of mountain cutting work on.

Keep a check on landslide.
also do remember, this is the season of one way traffic only
and it is for all cars, taxis, trucks, and army.
one day UP, one day DOWN.

Till when can we expect Zojila to open this year?
The amount of snowfall has been less this year as compared to previous years.

Too early to predict.
Snowfall does take place whole of March.
Therefore it will be in 1st week of May that any prediction is possible.
In any case the opening is in phases.
In phase 1 only 1 lane is open so only locals are allowed.
In phase 2 two lanes are open and only then tourist traffic is allowed.

Ya, it was snowing for the last few days.

So by mid-May it should be open if everything remains on track.
Thanks
