Came back last night after a grueling 12 hour ride from Kalpa! Crazy downpour Solan onward till Panchkula. And yeah you will find showers near Rampur Bushair and Shalkar; it surprisingly drizzled at Hikkim as well when I was there. Very unpredictable weather, don't follow google really!

The traffic on the Hindustan-Tibet highway near Bhawanagar in Kinnaur has come to a halt for the last over 20 hours following a massive landslide, which was triggered by heavy rain.
The landslide occurred near Bhawanagar when over 10 huge boulders fell on the road.
Hundreds of vehicles are stranded on either side of the road and basic commodities did not reach Kinnaur.
The National Highway engineers and the local administration have blasted some five big rocks, and are trying to break the rest to clear the road.

No protection wall work started before monsoon; funds remain unused

Shimla, July 21

Apple orchardists of Domehar and Jaltahar villages along the Theog-Hatkoti National Highway (No 705) are living on the edge as their orchards are facing threat of extinction due to apathy of the National Highway wing of the Public Works Department, which had failed to start restoration works before the onset of monsoon in spite of repeated reminders.
Construction of the retaining walls and breast walls in the sliding area was required immediately as the stretch has become highly prone to landslides due to widening of the road. The orchards have developed fissures as the restoration of roads damaged during winters is yet to commence while monsoon is active in the state, says Aman Chauhan, a local.
The affected orchardists are running from pillar to post to get the work started. Despite that Rs 2.37 crore were sanctioned in April this year for construction of retaining and breast walls, works have not started yet. As many as 19 letters have been exchanged between the government departments and the farmers since February 2019 till date.

“This national highway is the lifeline of apple growers but frequent landslides due to inadequate protective walls are damaging the orchards and polluting the Giri river water as entire mud is flowing into the river. All this is happening due to sub-standard works done by contractors”, said retired engineer RL Justa, resident of affected village, who has lurking fear in his mind that heavy rains can spell doom for his orchard.
Most of the retaining walls and breast walls constructed last year have collapsed and restoration works are yet to commence. The threat to orchards was increasing with each passing day. It is unfortunate that even after the residents meeting Additional Chief Secretary (Public works) thrice and Engineer-in-chief twice and other concerned officers, the works have not been awarded.
Raising questions over the functioning of the NH wing, Justa demanded probe into the functioning of the NH wing and said that both the companies did not complete the work. The unfinished and tardy work has become the bane of affected people.
“During the month of April, the work was not started as the model code of conduct was in force. Now we are awaiting implementation of directions given by the ACS to the NH wing on April 12, 2019 to award the works within 15 days”, he said.

Guys, just completed the sach pass circuit. The route we took and the road conditions for members is as follows (we left on 19th and came back 23rd July and were the only tourists in and around Sach pass at that time). We were also lucky as we didn't get any rains in the entire trip. The car we took was a Tata Safari Storme 4X2

1. Day 1 Delhi to Bairagarg via Dalhousie (around 650 kms) - good roads till Dalhousie and pathetic near Bairagarh. Stayed at hotel Chamunda and took 13 hours to reach from Delhi

Day 2 Bairagarg to sach pass 31 kms in 2.5 hours - roads disappear after Satrundi check post and a lot of snow before and after Sach pass

Sach pass to Killar 40 kms - severely potholed roads

Killar to Udaipir 75 kms very bad roads with no good patch anywhere

Udaipur to Keylong 54 kms - decent roads all the way with some exceptions. We stopped at Keylong on day 2 and stayed at Atithi guest house

Total time taken from Bairagarh to Keylong 13 hours to cover appx 200 kms

Day 3 Keylong to Manali via Rohtang Pass 120 kms. Roads just before and after the pass are in a mess.

Day 4 rest at Manali

Day 5 Manali to Delhi in appx 12.5 hours good roads most of the way including Bilaspur. Some road works happening here and there but overall fine
