The early monsoon has hit the region on a hugely positive note, with the agrarian states of Punjab and Haryana receiving higher than normal rain fall in the month of June so far.
From June 1 to June 14, Punjab received 38 mm rain against the normal of 14.7 mm for this period, accounting for a surplus of 158 per cent, according to data compiled by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In Haryana, rain was for surplus by 146 per cent. The state received 33.7 mm rain against the normal of 13.7 mm for the aforementioned period. In of Himachal Pradesh, the surplus was relatively lower at 26 per cent. The hill state received 42.2 mm rain against the normal of 33.5 mm for that period.
The monsoon arrived over north India about 15 days ahead of its normal date of onset, which is a significant deviation in terms of climatic conditions as well as agro-economic practices. Rains impact sowing and cropping timing as well as the demand of water from dams and electricity or diesel for running bore wells.

Information released by IMD states that as on June 14 the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) is passing through Diu, Surat, Nandurbar, Bhopal, Nowgong, Hamirpur, Barabanki, Bareilly, Saharanpur, Ambala and Amritsar, covering the entire peninsular, central, east and northeastern India and some parts of north-western India.
However due to approaching of mid-latitude westerlies winds further progress of monsoon over remaining parts of northwest India is likely to be slow, according to the IMD.

Earlier, the IMD had predicted normal to above normal rainfall over most parts of South Asia during the 2021 southwest monsoon season from June to September. Geographically, above-normal rainfall is most likely over north-western India and some regions along the foothills of the Himalayas.
Even in May, the precipitation in the region had been good. Rain was 138 percent above normal in Haryana and 39 per cent above normal in Punjab, but deficient by four per cent in Himachal Pradesh.

Manali, July 5

After almost 15 months Manali is again abuzz with tourists thronging Solang, Vashisht and the latest attraction, the Rohtang tunnel.
The hoteliers are happy with most properties registering high occupancy.
The tourist rush is highest on weekends, though the influx continues through the week with the mercury rising in the plains.

Within a fortnight after June 14 when the state government announced Covid relaxations, as many as 23,900 outside vehicles paid the green tax charged by the Tourism Development Council, Kullu.
Tourists from Delhi, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, who are flocking to Manali, are indulging in adventure activities like rock climbing, trekking and river rafting in the Beas.

Large numbers of tourists are arriving in Manali en route to Leh-Ladakh, which, too, is contributing to reviving the tourism industry. The taxi owners are also relieved.
The tourism industry had taken a severe beating after the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic as hotels, guesthouses and home-stays had suffered huge losses.

According to hoteliers, over 5,000 outside vehicles are entering the hill town on weekends.
Majority of the popular tourist destinations in Himachal - Kasauli, Kullu-Manali, Shimla-Kufri-Narkanda, Dalhousie-Khajjiar - are witnessing huge tourist rush, especially on weekends.

Himachal Pradesh: Security Increased In Manali After Influx Of Tourists
Himachal Pradesh: Security Increased In Manali After Influx Of Tourists

From June 27 to July 6, the police have issued 308 challans, with fines totaling a whopping Rs 2.77 lakh in Manali.

Himachal Pradesh has been witnessing a huge increase in the arrival of tourists after easing of lockdown restrictions. Most of the tourists arriving in the state do not follow the Covid 19 protocol during their stay in the state. As a result, a few weeks back the Central Government apparently wrote to the State Government of Himachal Pradesh to not let their guard down.

After this, security in Manali has been increased and the police are keeping a watch for strict implementation of Covid-19 guidelines among tourists. Manali is one of the destinations in Himachal Pradesh to receive an overwhelming number of tourists. From June 27 to July 6, the police have issued 308 challans, with fines totalling a whopping Rs 2.77 lakh in Manali.

Despite several warnings by the Central Government and politicians, people continued to take the pandemic lightly. As a consequence serious measures were taken by the state to avoid a third wave of the virus. Although the cases have decreased significantly in the past few weeks, the danger has not been completely averted. And that’s the message the state governments are still trying to spread among careless citizens.

The Mall Road in Manali has seen an increase in police presence to ensure that people follow the basic coronavirus guidelines at all times.

Manali District Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar said that people are being made aware of Covid 19 by Manali Police. Tourists who are roaming without masks are also being fined.
