I am delighted to read that these projects have inspired you take up photography seriously. That was the only aim of starting these projects.
For metering please check this article by Henry. Very lucid and informative
Start using Lightroom for PP instead of Picasa. Lightroom gives you immense control of adjusting your pictures. You will love it!
