Advice Needed: Srinagar in Mid-Feb (Via Road)

Hi All,

We (me & my wife) are looking to visit Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgaam etc during mid-Feb 2016 (Valentine week), for 4-5 days. Need assistance from forum member(s) if they can share their experience & views.

1. Is it possible to do this trip via Road (Delhi-Srinagar-Delhi). I don't have issue in driving, but i'm more concerend about road condition(s) due to snow / land slides

2. I'm pretty experienced in driving, but have low slung sedan. Would it be ok to drive it there.

3. If not by road, I would be taking DELHI-SRINAGAR flight; but would anyways need taxi/cab there? How easy/difficult would it be during Feb

4. How is Feb month to explore these places. What would be ideal spots to visit. I believe almost everything would be covered in snow

5. I have read, that this being off-season; hotels accommodation should not be an issue. Should I pre-book hotels (say via Goibibo) or just walk into hotel.

6. What would be cheaper, considering Goibibo generally runs 50% discount

7. What should be first & last destination to stay (If I take flight); considering it should be easily commutable from airport

If it snows heavily, Tunnel gets closed for a week or so.

It is OK,
if weather is OK .

3. If not by road, I would be taking DELHI-SRINAGAR flight; but would anyways need taxi/cab there? How easy/difficult would it be during Feb

Taxi is available there easily.
If it snows during landing at Srinagar, flight can be returned back to Delhi.

Not much is there, but main attractions will get a different look.

5. I have read, that this being off-season; hotels accommodation should not be an issue. Should I pre-book hotels (say via Goibibo) or just walk into hotel.

Just walk into hotel.
Choose 2-3 hotels early on websites.

6. What would be cheaper, considering Goibibo generally runs 50% discount

It all depends on your bargaining power if you are good at doing it on the spot.
Otherwise book in advance.

7. What should be first & last destination to stay (If I take flight); considering it should be easily commutable from airport

I think adsatinder summed it up for you completely

It can be adventurous by road, and it can be fun by air.
just choose one option and goooooo.

What you could do it to keep a check on BBC weather for Afghanistans
if there is a large Western Disturbance heading towards the Valley, delay you departure, go about 2 to 3 days after it has passed over
that way if any roads do get blocked they would have been cleared by the time u get there, and this is also valid if u go by air, to make sure the runway is open.
The main advantage of Jammu Srinagar highway is that the army wants it always open,
and so efforts are on top priority to keep this road open.
But certainly do not go a few days before or on same day that the Western Disturbance arrives over the Valley,
you will get stuck in uncertainties.

Even if u go by road, you can always take the option of hiring a local taxi like Innova at Srinagar, which in anywise you will do if going by air.
so say you go by road, and at Srinagar you get confirmation that roads are open to Gulmarg and Pahalgam, then you are in for a super time.

No doubt, the fun is more in the journey to that place by road,
but if you want to be totally safe, go by air.

hope i have confused you enough to wonder what to do..... well, Srinagar in Winter, and Ladakh as a whole, it like that. Plan, but be ready for unexpected.
and don't forget to charge ur camera batteries before you leave home.

Be a Good person but Don't try to Prove.
You can visit JKTDC website as they have properties all over J&K. They offer winter discount also. Just an option.

that is going to be a fantastic trip for the month of January,
you did not mention the date for start of your journey

Keep a check of Western Disturbance arrival on BBC Delhi weather,
so that you get a good road drive, and can anticipate exactly when to get to the Valley for all the fun.
